Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for VisionQuest Episode 6. Summary In an interview with Collider, Lauren Morais reveals the backstory and inspiration behind her VisionQuest character, Lisa Molinari. Morais breaks down the biggest moments from Episode 6, including the Tommy and Lisa kiss and those nanobots. She also shares which MCU characters she wants Lisa to meet and her favorite VisionQuest meme. Lauren Morais was working at a movie theater selling tickets to Captain America: Brave New World when she got the offer to join the MCU. Though not her first professional role (her credits include crime thrillers The Crow Girl, The Red King, and Mudtown), it’s certainly her biggest, and if there is any justice in the world, it will be far from her last. Morais has emerged as a breakout alongside her partner-in-crime Ruaridh Mollica, with their onscreen dynamic acting as the heart of the series. Morais plays Lisa Molinari, aka Coat of Arms in the comics, which the show cleverly pays tribute to by making her a master pickpocket. Lisa instantly forms a connection with Tommy (Mollica) when they find themselves seated next to one another on a prison bus, becoming each other’s closest confidants and friends — and perhaps even something more. From helping Tommy and Vision (Paul Bettany) sneak into the gala in Episode 4 to having nanobots implanted in her in Episode 6, Lisa has already been through a lot over the course of the show. Luckily, she’s a survivor. Collider got a chance to speak to Morais about her work in the show. During the conversation, she revealed the backstory she created for Lisa to make her feel so authentic, MCU characters she’d love to see Lisa interact with, and how she prepared to film those pickpocketing scenes. She also breaks down Tommy and Lisa's kiss and her “harrowing” transformation at the end of Episode 6. ‘VisionQuest’s Lauren Morais Spills Secrets About Lisa Molinari’s Past “There are so many cool girls — a lot of survivors from where I'm from.” COLLIDER: We get little hints about Lisa's background and family situation, but we don't get it all spelled out for us. I'm curious if there's anything that you either fleshed out on your own or that Terry Matalas told you that we didn't see in the show that helped you understand her and influenced your approach to playing her. LAUREN MORAIS: Obviously, I had the context that she was an orphan from the sides I got and her relationship with Tommy. I kind of fleshed it out in the sense that, in my head, the blip took her mom. She lived with her mum — she didn't really know her dad — and she lived in Cardiff and had to fend for herself. I figured out in my head that she learned how to pickpocket in Cardiff and look after herself a bit, and because Cardiff is such a small place, everyone figured out her game on Queen Street. And then she goes to London, and we have the story where she nicked the wrong wallet one time, and then she meets Tommy. So that's what I kind of based her upbringing around. That’s why, when I went to our costume designer, Sarah Young, I asked if Lisa could have a little Welsh spoon necklace, and I gave it a little story that her mom gave it to her growing up. That's where I kind of started fleshing out her story. I know Ruaridh mentioned that he took inspiration from Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting for his character. Are there any performances that you drew from when preparing for Lisa? MORAIS: You know what, I was just thinking a lot about friends I had and people around me while growing up in Cardiff. I'm from this place called Llanrumney in Cardiff, and there are so many cool girls — a lot of survivors from where I'm from. I took the little edge from my best friends in Cardiff and brought it to Lisa Molinari. ‘VisionQuest’s Lauren Morais Reveals Her Dream MCU Crossovers “Should we just get all the girls together?” You've mentioned in other interviews that you're also a big Agatha fan. I am as well. I feel like the relationship between Tommy and Lisa actually mirrors the one between Billy and Agatha in some ways, especially because Lisa tells Tommy that he should essentially do and be whatever he needs to survive. I'm curious if you saw any connections between those relationships as well. MORAIS: Yeah, now you're bringing it up, that's an amazing connection. They’re both on journeys together and so close to someone yet so far away. And there’s secrecy. In Episode 4, Tommy kind of lashes out at Lisa a bit because she's not saying what's going on in her head. Obviously, the Witches’ Road is a physical destination and journey, but it definitely mirrors their journey of getting to know each other and having secrets. Family is complicated, and when you come from trauma, what do you want to share? And what do you feel like the other person can take? I really like your connection as well. That leads into my next question because I really want a Lisa and Agatha interaction someday. What do you think that would look like? MORAIS: I saw someone comment that they think Agatha and Lisa need to meet, and I was like, “Absolutely.” I think it would be quite a funny interaction because I feel like they'd size each other up a bit. They're very strong, independent women, but I think at first, they'll be like, “Okay, who's the top dog?” But then I feel like they’d both appreciate their deviousness with it. I think Lisa would try to pickpocket Agatha, but I don't think she’d get far. I don't think that'd go so well. MORAIS: It's not looking good for Lisa. [Laughs] I need it so badly, though. We're gonna manifest that into existence. Are there any other MCU characters you would love to see Lisa interact with? MORAIS: Oh my god, I love these questions. Who would I like her to get involved with? I think Yelena would be so funny. I think they would be so funny together. Lisa would be like, “Do you want to pickpocket? Do you want to steal something?” And she'd be like, “Yes.” And she would just be driving it. I think they would just have such funny adventures. I'm just thinking about that now. Me too. Dynamic duo for sure. MORAIS: Should we just get all the girls together? Let's go! We're opening the writers’ room. ‘VisionQuest’s Lauren Morais Breaks Down Tommy and Lisa’s Biggest Moments in Episode 6 “Do you really think I'm gonna abandon you now? Come on, Tommy.” Image via Disney+ Episode 6 sees Lisa kiss Tommy after he tells her to run to safety. Why do you think she chose that moment to do that? Because it's been building and building a little bit. MORAIS: In the previous episode, she’s like, “I've been watching Vision glitch because he's a robot. You’ve vaguely mentioned your mom, who's a witch.” There’s a lot of desperation, and like, “If not now, when? I'm not sure where this journey's going, but I want to do it with you. I want to support you.” I feel like they didn't want to risk their friendship, because they're such good friends, but I think now there are so many different parts involved; it's now or never. She wants to tell him the truth and be there for him. I like how she goes, “You're an idiot. How can you not notice this whole time? I've been with you every step of the way throughout your journey. I found you on that bus. I get you through the panic attacks, and whenever we're going through it, we always make funny stories to get through it. Do you really think I'm gonna abandon you now? Come on, Tommy.” She tells it like it is, and I really love that. I also really love the scene where they're stuck in Paladin's car together, and the oxygen levels are dropping. What was it like to film those with the added challenge of trying to run out of breath while delivering your lines and talking to the screen with Edith? MORAIS: It was really, really fun. We would do the non-breathing bit, and then we'd check in after the take and be like, “Are you doing it like this? Okay, we're gonna go again.” That was really fun. And being in a confined space at probably 3 a.m.added to the funniness. We actually saw the screens with Edith and heard the voice. It was really freaky and funny. I just love it when you do silly things as an actor, and it’s so heightened, but what's good with Ruaridh is — because we're so comfortable together — we can properly commit. I never felt silly doing those scenes with Ruaridh. Because he's an absolute legend, that's why. The end of Episode 6 takes a turn when we see Lisa get these nanos put in her. What was it like to film that, and what can you tease about how that's going to unfold? MORAIS: It was really fun planning it and figuring out what that transformation was. You see the scripts, and you're like, “I need to now take on a bit of T’Nia’s Jocasta likeness.” Obviously, we have very different accents, but we figured that out with the twitching. I was watching her in the gala scene when she transforms from her Jocasta metal shell back into Jo Carrington and how that worked, so I kind of used that as a base and then we went from there. Obviously, in postproduction, they added those freaky bone-clicking things. It was absolutely disgusting, but incredible at the same time. I remember going to do some voice stuff over it, and they were like, “Do you want to see the transformation?” And I was like, “That is horrible and harrowing. Fair play. You guys are banging at your jobs.” We worked together to merge those two aspects, so that was really fun. In terms of Lisa going forward, I don't want to give too much away, but you know that girl's going through it. It's a horror movie right now. I love the genre-blending that's going on. MORAIS: Yeah, absolutely. I think that's what's so amazing about the series: it's so gripping, and you don't know where it's gonna go next. I can't wait for people to see more. Lauren Morais on LGBTQ+ Representation and Her Favorite ‘VisionQuest’ Memes “It's nice to see that a lot of our queer Marvel community feel like they can belong and feel represented.” Image via Disney+ You've said that your girlfriend got you into the MCU. Ruaridh, T’Nia, and Joe Locke are also all openly queer. What is it like to be part of a show with so many LGBTQ+ artists? MORAIS: It's hard to explain it, really. It’s just a sense of family and belonging. You come from a shared experience, and you get so many references because you're in the same queer community, and you can have jokes on set. It's just an honor to be a part of that, and it's been so lovely seeing comments of people celebrating this cast of so many queer members. It’s so beautiful, and it's nice to see that a lot of our queer Marvel community feel like they can belong and feel represented. Ruaridh said he's been keeping up with all the theories and memes. Do you have a favorite meme or theory that you've seen personally? MORAIS: I'd say 10 of my friends sent me a screenshot of the photos of Lisa saying, “She can scam me any day.” I was like, “Guys, behave, behave.” But I found that really funny because I would just get a notification, and it’d be the same photo. That was a funny day for me. That was hilarious. It's not where I thought it'd go, but it’s amazing. Lauren Morais Talks ‘VisionQuest’s Intense Stunts “There's loads of technical aspects to it.” Image via Disney+ I want to go back a little bit because Episode 4 with the gala is one of my favorites. Lisa's skills and expertise come in so handy when she swipes the ticket while Tommy and Vision are arguing in Italian. What was it like filming that sequence? Because it is kind of a stunt that you have to do. MORAIS: I got training in sleight of hand, and that was really fun. There's loads of technical aspects to it. As I watched the episode with my friends, I showed them the videos, because they were like, “How did you learn all these things?” It was really interesting learning that. It's all about distraction. I thought it was all about how you can steal these things — and obviously, that's a part of it — but you need to be distracting with one hand. Specifically, developing the costume with Sarah [was cool]. I remember seeing the script, and it's like, “Lisa wears this blazer with two fake hands, and she uses her other hands to get it,” and I thought, “That is so fun.” It’s also a little nod to her being Coat of Arms. It was so funny pranking everyone on set all day. Obviously, some crew doesn't see the scripts, so I'd just be walking around with my hands, and they'd be like, “Hi Lauren, how are you?” And I would get out my other hands and shake their hands and hand people props and things. That was a really funny day on set, and to me, it never got old. I was doing it all day. You have to. If you have something like that, it's disrespectful not to. MORAIS: Yeah, literally coat of arms, what else am I gonna do? When is this opportunity gonna happen again? You get to do so many stunts, from those pickpocketing scenes to the chase sequences in the prison bus and the alleyway. Was there one that was the most difficult or the most fun to pull off for you? MORAIS: I think the most fun were definitely the sleight of hand ones with Ruaridh — our first scene when I distract him with the tie, then getting the wallet. Something that was a challenge but incredible was the fight scenes with Paul Bettany when the nanobot happens and that whole transformation. That was so fun to do because I've never done a fight scene of that caliber before, and I'm doing it with Paul Bettany, who's an absolute Marvel veteran. It was just so fun. Nadia [Hansell], who was my double for that, was so fun and supportive. It was a good atmosphere. When do you get to do a fight scene with Paul Bettany? It's not my everyday life.
