Visa cuts 2,600 jobs over AI restructuring, even senior management not spared

The payment company announced on Thursday that it was letting go 2,600 employees, accounting for roughly 7 per cent of its global workforce. Employees in tech and product teams are reportedly the most impacted, with some teams being let go entirely. And in some cases, even senior management was not spared.Ryan McInerney wrote in the memo that the layoffs were the right decision for the company. “I have deep conviction that we are doing what is right for Visa, our clients and our partners as we continue to focus on driving efficiency across the company in order to reinvest in our highest potential opportunities,” he stated.Visa had about 34,100 employees globally before this round of layoffs. The development comes as other payments and fintech firms also trim their workforces. Earlier this year, Mastercard said it would cut 4 per cent of its global workforce, while Fintech firm Block, led by Jack Dorsey, cut nearly half of its workforce, or about 4,000 jobs, in February.Some senior managers affectedVisa’s layoffs go beyond entry or mid-level roles. The company has also decided to cut jobs at senior positions. Jinal Doshi, the director for security engineering at Visa, wrote on LinkedIn that she had also been affected. “Earlier this morning, I was impacted by a large round of layoffs at Visa due to organisational restructuring, alongside many incredibly talented teammates and technical leaders,” Jinal shared. She had spent seven years at Visa. Jinal Doshi said that she was laid off in a post on LinkedIn. Jinal was working at Visa on an H1-B visa. “Since I am currently on H1-B, I am urgently looking for a new role,” she added. In case you are unaware, if you are working in the US on an H1-B visa and get laid off, you have 60 days to find a new role. Or else, you must leave the country.'My entire team got laid off' Some claim that Visa has shut down some teams entirely as part of the decision. A former employee, Arnab Das, said on X that his entire team was let go. “My entire team at Visa just got laid off including my manager,” he wrote.Das claimed that his former manager had received outstanding performance reviews but was still laid off. “The guy had end-to-end ownership of the product, outstanding performance reviews every cycle, and was probably the last person you’d expect to be let go,” he wrote. “Feeling shocked. And strangely lucky that I left Visa.” Arnab Das claimed that his former team at Visa was let go. Visa joins the long list of companies that have cut jobs in the past few months as the industry evolves.
