More than 2,50,000 people have fled wildfires burning from Norway to the Mediterranean in one of Europe's fiercest fire seasons on record. For most of Europe's history, the weather rarely delivered all three at once.This summer it has, again and again, from Norway in the north down through France, Spain and Italy.By July 26, more than 2,50,000 people had been evacuated in France and Spain alone. Spain declared its first national wildfire emergency as blazes near Madrid and Avila swallowed tens of thousands of hectares.To understand why, you have to look up at the sky itself. WHAT IS A HEAT DOME, AND WHY WON'T IT LEAVE?High above your head runs the jet stream, a fast river of wind that circles the planet and normally shepherds cool, wet Atlantic weather into Europe.As the Arctic warms, that river slows and buckles. Sometimes it splits into two branches, a state scientists call a double jet, and when it does, it can park a dome of high pressure over Europe for days. Clouds cannot form. The Sun bakes the ground unopposed.Research by Efi Rousi and Kai Kornhuber links these stubborn double jets to almost all of western Europe's accelerating heat.HOW DOES DRY SOIL MAKE THE AIR EVEN HOTTER?Heat alone does not light a forest. It prepares one.Hot, dry air behaves like a sponge, and scientists measure its thirst as vapour pressure deficit, simply how hard the air pulls moisture out of leaves and soil. Normally, the Sun's energy is spent evaporating water from moist ground. Once the ground is bone dry, that energy heats the air instead. Hotter air dries the soil further, which makes the air hotter still.The forest becomes, in effect, pre-heated fuel, ready to catch fire in seconds.WHY DO THE BIGGEST WILDFIRES CREATE THEIR OWN WEATHER?The fiercest blazes stop obeying the weather and start writing their own.A large fire sends a towering column of hot air and smoke skyward. The branch that does this is called attribution science, which compares today's climate with a cooler, imagined world without our emissions.Its verdict on the June 2026 heatwave that primed these fires was stark. World Weather Attribution found it virtually impossible without human warming, and about 100 times more likely than two decades ago. A separate 2026 study found the extreme dryness feeding these fires has become roughly nine times more likely.Europe is warming twice as fast as the planet, which is why forests in Scandinavia, once too damp to burn, now do.A wildfire has always been an ancient thing.
