When Tim Sweeney isn't stirring a pot of controversy on X, the company is throwing itself into AI-first development and, as of last night, rolling out previews for a vibecoded launcher while taking potshots at Steam. Unsurprisingly, the new EGS is a complete and utter mess. "Straight into garbage it goes," said @ShyVortex. "Fastest uninstallation of all time." Users report broken buttons, floating icons, the launcher outright freezing, a ghosting effect when dragging the window, and the launcher no longer asking where you want to install a game, instead picking a location at random. Naturally, in the middle of all this backlash, Tim Sweeney announced that Fortnite is now supported on Linux, thanks once again to vibecoding. Given that handing the programming reins to AI has made an already infamously buggy, feature-deprived platform even worse, I wouldn't expect Fortnite to fare much better. "It's a miracle Epic Games lacks a mascot like Discord, because some artist on this site would depict it boiling alive in the Land Battleship by now," said @YZsFerrari. Game Dev Warns You Should Remove Card Details From Epic Games Store Those vibecoded 'game inside of game' projects and fan-made PC ports that are polluting the modding scene might seem novel from the outside, but clips are often cherry-picked for the best results. Underneath it all is spaghetti code exacerbating performance issues and bugs, which is incredibly hard to fix when you don't have any programming know-how and are throwing tokens at Claude hoping that it'll listen and not hallucinate. That's the core issue with vibecoding. It's not sustainable, and makes the underlying program much harder to untangle. So, with Epic Games Store now rolling out a vibecoded preview, fans aren't just angry at the bugs, performance issues, and smarm of Tim Sweeney and his bizarre one-sided crusade against Steam, they're concerned about security. AI-generated code can introduce vulnerabilities that aren't immediately obvious; if buttons don't work and the interface freezes, what else have developers missed? "I would strongly advise removing all payment methods linked to your EGS account if you use one," Obsidian Entertainment senior technical artist and GearGrit creator Weston Mitchell posted. "Them publicly announcing the new update was vibecoded does not give me confidence to keep my card linked with it." That's not to say EGS is currently unsafe, but there's certainly room for concern when Epic is using AI to vibecode what feels like a late April Fool's joke. Whatever the case, my article from July claiming that the "Epic Games Store is about to get a whole lot better" has certainly aged like milk, and I can't exactly fault anyone for uninstalling it. In fact, I might go do just that.
