Vets warn of ‘hidden danger’ in summer grass that can cause blindness in dogs – as councils blamed for surge in cases

PET OWNERS have been warned of a hidden danger lurking in parks and countryside fields that can cause blindness in dogs. The UK has seen a surge in cases as the dry summer months continue. The seeds, known as foxtail seeds, have a pointed shape and sharp barbs which allows them to work their way into ears, eyes, nostrils, and paws, and remain stuck. They are most commonly found in open areas like countryside fields, grassy verges, and parks, where pets can pick up the thorny seeds while sniffing or walking. This has led to some owners blaming local councils for failing to cut grass and leaving pavements overgrown. Once inside, a vet is needed to remove the barbs, which in severe cases can even result in surgery, costing thousands of pounds. As a result, one vet clinic advised owners to regularly check their pets’ ears, paws and furs throughout their walk. They said: “Grass seeds can cause a lot of pain, irritation and infection if not caught quickly. Most read in The Sun “If you notice sudden head shaking, excessive licking, swelling, redness or signs of discomfort, please get in touch with us as soon as possible.” Foxtail seed cases typically peak around June until September, where dry weather exacerbates the problem.
