Vehicle – “Escalators”

I haven't been able to stop thinking about this gravel-pop track that came out earlier this week, and therefore I must blog. "Escalators" is the newest track from Leeds quartet Vehicle. It's fuzzy garage rock that recalls ? and the Mysterians or the 13th Floor Elevators. Vehicle are honing a sound from the '60s, similar to nostalgia-pop time travelers Sharp Pins. In fact, they're about to open for Sharp Pins at a show in Manchester next month.There are some trippy lines on "Escalators," like "You can hear the Shangri-La's in the distance/ Half-dead after dying in a fictional place" and "I wrote hold music with stolen guitars." That's some dreamy, Lynchian stuff.Frontman/guitarist Michael Cable explained, in a press release, that "it's a head in the clouds song, a valve amp tangent for all, a stream of consciousness floor filler for all our subterranean homesick ghosts to stay up for days swimming in." He continued, "It’s a surreal ramble about reaching intoxicating levels of burnout, seeing someone peering out at the world in slow motion, on the run from reality. This bubbles up into a glorious delirium where the lyrics and the music finally meet in the stark hush of outstretched escalators."Listen below. Dan Commons
