Vance to visit Iowa after House Republican war powers defections

Vice President JD Vance has added a campaign stop in Iowa this week as Republicans try to shore up a toss-up Senate race and three competitive House contests in the Hawkeye State before November’s midterm elections.Vance’s rally on Friday, organized by the Republican National Committee, comes after two battleground Republican incumbents, Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA) and Zach Nunn (R-IA), voted to restrict Trump’s war powers more than six months into the conflict with Iran on Tuesday.“With the negotiating window closed, sustained combat operations now require congressional authorization,” Nunn wrote on X. “Having deployed multiple times and flown over 700 combat hours in the Middle East, I will not support another open-ended war. We can defend Americans, pressure Iran, and pursue peace while ensuring Congress fulfills its constitutional responsibility.” Iran must be held accountable for killing Americans, supporting terrorism, threatening the Strait of Hormuz, and pursuing nuclear weapons. Iowa has already paid a devastating price, including two service members killed by an Iranian drone in Kuwait. Congress owes them, their…— Congressman Zach Nunn (@ZachNunn) September 16, 2026 Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA), who is running in the toss-up Senate race to replace retiring Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA), did not back the war powers resolution, which now goes to the Senate for its consideration.Vance’s rally in Council Bluffs, Iowa, will simultaneously serve to support the Republican nominee for Nebraska‘s 2nd Congressional District, Brinker Harding, since Council Bluffs is on the state’s border with the Cornhusker State and shares a media market with Omaha.Harding’s race to replace retiring Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE), however, is expected to favor Democrats in the blue-leaning area.Vance’s rally is his second public political event of the week after traveling to another red state, Kansas, on Monday for Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) with MAGA Inc., President Donald Trump’s super PAC.VANCE AND MAGA INC. WORK TO DEFEND ROGER MARSHALL IN REDDER KANSAS“In Doc Marshall, you have a man who devoted his life to delivering babies and making sure that moms and children from every walk of life were safe and had the health care that they need,” the vice president said in Olathe, Kansas. “So I ask you this November to stand for a man who stood for moms and babies, to stand for a man who stood for all Kansas, let’s stand for Doc Marshall and send the crazy people packing, ladies and gentlemen. Elect Roger Marshall to the United States Senate.”Vance made his first public appearance of the 2026 election cycle with MAGA Inc. earlier this month with a trip to battleground Michigan for Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers, Reps. Tom Barrett (R-MI) and Bill Huizenga (R-MI), in addition to Michael Bouchard, the GOP nominee to replace Rep. John James (R-MI), who is giving up his seat to contest the Wolverine State’s governorship.
