Uttar Pradesh MBBS BDS internship stipend doubled to Rs 25,000 monthly

The Uttar Pradesh government has doubled the monthly stipend for MBBS and BDS interns from Rs 12,000 to Rs 25,000. The decision was approved by the state Cabinet at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on August 25.The revised stipend will apply to students who have completed their MBBS or BDS examinations and are undergoing their compulsory rotatory internship in government medical colleges, institutions and medical universities across the state.WHO GETS RS 25,000 A MONTH?The hike is meant for eligible MBBS and BDS graduates completing their compulsory internship in state-run medical institutions.Interns work alongside doctors and healthcare staff during the training period. Their duties can include assisting with patient care in wards, outpatient departments and emergency services, as well as taking night duties. The government said the higher stipend will provide greater financial support during the internship and help strengthen the contribution of interns to patient care in government hospitals.This is the second stipend hike under the Yogi Adityanath government. In 2021, the monthly amount was increased from Rs 7,500 to Rs 12,000.HIKE COMES AFTER INTERN PROTEST The Cabinet decision comes just days after MBBS interns from several government medical colleges protested for an increase in their monthly stipend.The demonstration was held at King George's Medical University (KGMU) on August 22. Interns from KGMU, Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow, BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur and Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College in Meerut were among those who took part.The new amount is also expected to narrow the gap between Uttar Pradesh's internship stipend and those offered by several other states and central institutions.25 LAKH TABLETS ALSO CLEAREDThe Cabinet also approved the purchase of 25 lakh tablets under the Swami Vivekananda Youth Empowerment Scheme.The devices will be distributed free to eligible students pursuing undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma and skill-development programmes, including those in technical and health education and Industrial Training Institutes.The Uttar Pradesh government has allocated Rs 2,374.60 crore for the scheme in 2026-27.
