USC Football Injury: WR Corey Simms out for the season

Sophomore USC football receiver Corey Simms is officially out for the season after suffering a season-ending knee injury in the win over Rutgers. CBSSports.com’s Matt Zenitz first reported the news Thursday night. WeAreSC.com can confirm the injury. Simms took a hit to the knee in the fourth quarter of the Rutgers game two weeks ago on a fourth down attempt. Simms went down in pain before trying to walk off, but his leg appeared to give out. He remained down with the trainers for several moments before walking off the field. Simms did not return. He was seen after the game in an immobilizing knee brace and crutches. It was a painful end to a great performance by Simms, who scored the first TD of his career on a 52-yard reception. He finished the game with four receptions for 72 yards. He’ll end the season with 12 receptions for 178 yards and a TD. Simms is the second confirmed season-ending injury of the season along with offensive lineman Kilian O’Connor. O’Connor suffered a lower body injury in the first week of camp. He is the second consecutive major receiver injury along with start freshman Trent Mosley. Mosley suffered a knee injury in the win over Louisiana and has missed the last two games. Mosley is ruled DOUBTFUL for this weekend against Washington. BECOME A WEARESC MEMBER TODAY! Simms did standout in one trait that the Trojans will miss moving forward: run blocking. Simms leads the wide receivers with a 77.6 grade via Pro Football Focus, third overall on the team. In fact, both Mosley and Simms are the top two receiver run blockers for the offense. The Trojans have plenty of options for the outside, including sophomore Tanook Hines. Hines has yet to really get going after missing the entire offseason with surgery. The other clear option is the 6-foot-2 junior Terrell Anderson. The junior NC State transfer projected for a big Year 1 with USC but was slowed by a fall camp injury. Anderson did not play a meaningful snap in the Rutgers win outside of returning punts with Mosley out. The transfer recorded two receptions for 50 yards in the loss to Oregon. He suited up for the first time in the Louisiana win. Freshmen Tron Baker and Boobie Feaster could also take up more of Simms’ reps moving forward. No. 18 USC football (4-1, 1-1) will host Washington (3-1, 0-1) in a potential bounce back game this weekend.
