Another NATO ally is expected to take over command of the alliance-led Security Assistance Group–Ukraine (SAG-U) within a year, US officials told the news outlet on condition of anonymity. Politico’s sources said arms deliveries would not be affected. The current commander of SAG-U, Army Lt. Gen. Curtis Buzzard, will depart from his post on Monday and be replaced by another US Army general to wind down American operations at the Wiesbaden-based group. The Pentagon said in a statement that the move is part of a broader effort to scale back US involvement in Europe and transfer more responsibility to European NATO allies. “SAG-U was always meant to be temporary,” the statement read. “This effort is aimed at burden shifting within the Alliance to support Ukraine and to align US resources in accordance with the National Defense Strategy.” US withdrawal SAG-U was established in 2022 to operate alongside NATO’s Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine mission in coordinating the supply, training and long-term planning of Ukraine’s armed forces. As part of Washington’s pivot away from Europe, key NATO positions previously occupied by American officers have been taken over by other allies. The White House said in February that the UK will take control of NATO’s Joint Command Center in Norfolk, Virginia. In related developments, leadership of the Joint Command Center in Naples is to be assumed by Italy while Germany and Poland will take control of the Joint Command in Brunssum, the Netherlands.
