US startup joins nuclear alliance to power hyperscale computing with microreactors

The KRONOS MMR is among NANO Nuclear's advanced microreactor designs for future clean energy.Nano Nuclear Energy U.S. startup NANO Nuclear Energy has joined the Virginia Nuclear Energy Consortium (VNEC), a move that places the advanced microreactor developer closer to one of the fastest-growing electricity markets in the United States as demand from artificial intelligence data centers continues to rise. The membership gives the company a seat within Virginia’s nuclear industry network, where utilities, universities, technology firms, engineering companies and policymakers are working to accelerate advanced reactor deployment, workforce development and nuclear manufacturing. As part of the agreement, NANO Nuclear CEO James Walker will join the VNEC Board of Directors. The company said the membership will help it build relationships with organizations exploring advanced nuclear power for data centers, industrial facilities, military sites and other critical infrastructure. Virginia has emerged as a key location for advanced nuclear development because it hosts the world’s largest concentration of data centers while also maintaining a mature nuclear supply chain, fuel fabrication capabilities and a skilled workforce. Those factors have made the state a focal point for deploying advanced and small modular reactors. Data centers drive demand The company believes its reactor portfolio could support a range of applications, including dedicated power generation for hyperscale data centers, industrial heat, grid support and energy systems for remote locations with limited infrastructure. Virginia’s long-term nuclear strategy also calls for expanding advanced reactor deployment, strengthening the nuclear supply chain, developing workforce pipelines and establishing research capabilities through the Virginia Innovative Nuclear Hub. “Virginia represents one of the most compelling locations in the United States for the future deployment of advanced nuclear technology,” said Jay Yu, Chairman and Founder of NANO Nuclear Energy. “It combines a deeply established nuclear industry, world-class universities, a highly capable technical workforce, major defense and national security activities, and the largest concentration of data centers anywhere in the world.” The company said joining VNEC gives it an opportunity to participate in discussions around future nuclear projects while introducing its broader portfolio beyond a single reactor technology. Beyond reactor development Unlike companies focused solely on reactor design, NANO Nuclear is also expanding into nuclear fuel, transportation and engineering services. Its portfolio includes the KRONOS MMR, a stationary high-temperature gas-cooled microreactor currently in pre-application engagement with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and ZEUS, a portable solid-core battery reactor. The company is also developing the space-focused LOKI MMR for future extraterrestrial power applications. Beyond reactor technology, the company is building capabilities across the nuclear fuel supply chain. Its subsidiary Advanced Fuel Transportation develops nuclear transport systems, while HALEU Energy Fuel is working toward domestic production of high-assay, low-enriched uranium fuel for advanced reactors.
