US opens 56,000-square-foot factory to build hydrogen-powered drones at scale

Hydrogen-powered drone manufacturing is expanding across the United States as Heven AeroTech opens a 56,000-square-foot production facility in Winchester, Virginia, establishing its first East Coast site and launching a national manufacturing network. Announced on September 2, the opening builds on the company’s existing manufacturing operations in the Columbia River Gorge. The Virginia facility will support production of its Z1 hydrogen-powered drone while establishing the processes and supply chains needed to expand American-made unmanned aerial systems for defense partners. From boutique production to industrial scale Heven says the new network is intended to move hydrogen-powered drones beyond small-scale manufacturing, creating a repeatable production model that can be deployed across multiple facilities. “U.S. national security demands a resilient, sovereign technology base capable of scaling beyond prototyping,” said Bentzion Levinson, Founder and CEO of Heven AeroTech. “The launch of Heven AeroTech’s coast-to-coast manufacturing network transitions hydrogen-powered UAS from boutique production to an industrialized, highly repeatable capability, aligning directly with the deployment mandates of our defense partners,” he added. The Winchester operation will serve as the blueprint for a phased expansion across the country. Each planned facility is expected to include hydrogen propulsion manufacturing capabilities. However, the company has not specified how many additional sites it intends to open or where they will be located. Virginia will serve as a production site and support the broader expansion. Virginia facility established within 90 days The company said it stood up its first East Coast facility within 90 days, with the opening intended to demonstrate how quickly domestic drone manufacturing capacity can be established. “By standing up our first East Coast facility within 90 days, we are proving that domestic UAS manufacturing can move at tactical speed to meet the immediate and emerging needs of those carrying out critical missions,” said Michael Buscher, President of Heven AeroTech USA. Production at the site will support the company’s flagship Z1 hydrogen-powered drone, which Heven identifies as a Defense Innovation Unit Blue UAS Select platform. Alongside aircraft production, the Virginia operation is establishing manufacturing processes, quality systems, supply chain infrastructure, and operational practices for sustained growth. These functions are central to the company’s stated goal of building a scalable domestic manufacturing network. Expansion plans include research and hiring Heven’s longer-term plans extend beyond aircraft assembly. Its vision for the network includes advanced hydrogen research and development laboratories, automated manufacturing infrastructure, and dedicated areas where technology providers could operate alongside its facilities. Those elements remain part of the company’s long-term vision, rather than capabilities confirmed as operational at the newly opened Virginia site. The company expects the expanding network to create hundreds of jobs nationwide over the coming years. Recruitment is underway as production ramps up, with future hiring focused on manufacturing technicians, aircraft assembly, quality, operations, and supply chain positions. Heven did not provide a production target for the Winchester facility or a detailed timetable for the remaining network rollout.
