Representative image of small modular reactors (SMRs).Getty Images US-based nuclear technology company NANO Nuclear Energy has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Enveniam to explore projects spanning nuclear fuel transportation, microreactor deployment, advanced manufacturing and energy infrastructure in the US. The companies will assess how Enveniam’s engineering and project-delivery capabilities could support NANO Nuclear’s developing reactor and fuel-cycle businesses. Any specific project, funding or commercial transaction would require a separate agreement. The collaboration covers six areas, including transportation of high-assay, low-enriched uranium (HALEU), uranium conversion and deconversion, microreactor commercialization, advanced manufacturing, domestic fuel supply and commercial energy projects. Building the nuclear backbone One focus will be NANO Nuclear’s HALEU transportation systems. The companies could work on transport-basket optimization, regulatory filings, safety and security requirements. HALEU is expected to be important for many advanced reactors because their designs can require uranium enriched beyond the limit used by most conventional reactors “Commercializing advanced nuclear technology requires more than a strong reactor design,” said James Walker, Chief Executive Officer of NANO Nuclear Energy. “It requires disciplined licensing, safety analysis, project controls, supply-chain coordination, manufacturing planning and operational readiness. Enveniam’s capabilities closely align with our expertise and business plans across these critical workflows. We believe this collaboration can help us evaluate projects more efficiently, identify execution risks earlier and build stronger delivery plans as opportunities advance toward definitive agreements.” The agreement also targets manufacturing infrastructure. The companies will explore requirements for a potential US facility producing nuclear fuel, fuel components and microreactor modules, along with engineering design and operational-readiness planning. Microreactors meet rising demand Microreactor commercialization is another major workstream. Potential support could cover siting, licensing, fabrication, safety-basis development, project controls and deployment planning for NANO Nuclear’s KRONOS MMR Energy System and portable microreactor designs. The companies are also looking at customers that need reliable power or industrial heat. These include data centers, remote communities, Alaska Native organizations, island jurisdictions and other energy-intensive users. Potential applications could include electricity, process heat, desalination and hybrid systems combining microreactors with renewable generation. For remote locations that depend heavily on imported fossil fuels, such systems could provide an alternative source of continuous energy. “This MOU brings together two organizations with complementary capabilities across the advanced nuclear value chain,” said Jay Yu, Founder and Chairman of NANO Nuclear Energy. “NANO Nuclear is building a vertically integrated platform spanning microreactors, nuclear fuel and transportation, while Enveniam brings extensive experience integrating complex nuclear and energy programs. By exploring opportunities together, we aim to strengthen the practical pathway from technology development to regulatory licensing, manufacturing and deployment, while preserving the flexibility to evaluate each potential project on its individual merits.” The companies will form a joint working group to review potential projects and identify opportunities that could progress to funded statements of work or task orders. They may also pursue federal or state funding opportunities together.The MOU remains exploratory and does not guarantee a reactor project, manufacturing facility, or fuel-cycle investment.
