US Mint unveils special half-dollar coin on 25th anniversary of 9/11 terrorist attacks

The U.S. Mint unveiled the Semiquincentennial Enduring Liberty Half Dollar this week, releasing the limited-edition coin in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.The Mint presented 2,983 half-dollar coins to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum on Friday, one for each person killed in the Sept. 11 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The coins feature the date “9-11-01” encircled by the words “ALWAYS REMEMBER.” Recommended Stories “This coin is a tangible representation of the strength it took for our nation to look forward, both 250 years ago at its founding, but more poignantly 25 years ago, as the world was changed forever,” U.S. Mint Director Paul Hollis said in a statement. “Offering these special coins to a greater number of Americans affords more of us a tangible reminder of how the Nation came together on that fateful day, and provides us opportunity to educate younger generations, many of whom were not even born, about the sacrifices made.” Nearly 3,000 people were killed 25 years ago on Friday when radical Islamic jihadists hijacked multiple passenger airliners. Two were flown into New York City’s World Trade Center towers, while another struck the Pentagon outside Washington, D.C. Passengers aboard United Flight 93 fought back against the hijackers, preventing the plane from reaching its intended target before it crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.The Treasury Department’s new coin commemorating the tragedy will be available for the public to preorder on the Mint’s website through Sept. 25. For the 10th anniversary in 2011, the Treasury Department released a one-ounce silver September 11 National Medal featuring Lady Liberty holding a “Lamp of Remembrance” and the inscription “ALWAYS REMEMBER.”
