US Marines acquire 12 Rheinmetall amphibious robots for autonomous logistics

American Rheinmetall, the US arm of German defense company Rheinmetall, has secured a $7.28 million contract to supply autonomous ground vehicles to the US Marine Corps. The company will manufacture and deliver 12 Mission Master SP Autonomous Unmanned Ground Vehicles (A-UGVs), five amphibious kits, associated Marine Kits, and other supporting equipment. The vehicles will help the service test autonomous logistics and expeditionary mobility technologies. The Defense Logistics Agency is executing the procurement, with military equipment supplier ADS Inc. serving as the prime contractor. The equipment will support the US Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory’s operational evaluations and capability development efforts. Most advanced Mission Master configuration According to Rheinmetall, the vehicles represent the most advanced Mission Master configuration it has developed to date. Amphibious kits for coastal missions Each Mission Master SP is built around Rheinmetall’s PATH autonomy system, which allows military vehicles to perform tasks with reduced human involvement. The new configuration also includes enhanced vehicle capabilities and support for integrating different mission payloads. Five amphibious kits will allow the unmanned vehicles to operate in water and across coastal environments. This capability is particularly relevant to the Marine Corps, which must move personnel, equipment, and supplies between ships, beaches, and inland positions during expeditionary missions. The vehicles can support logistics without exposing Marines to every hazardous part of a resupply operation. Rheinmetall said the systems could also improve mobility and extend the operational reach of crewed and uncrewed units. Supporting autonomous logistics development The contract covers more than the delivery of the vehicles and kits. Rheinmetall will also provide supporting equipment, program management, training, capability development, and engineering services. American Rheinmetall will lead the work, while Rheinmetall Canada will support the program as the original equipment manufacturer. The vehicles will undergo further experimentation as the Marine Corps explores how autonomous systems can assist distributed forces. The program could also support Rheinmetall’s longer-term plan to expand autonomous vehicle manufacturing in the United States. The company intends to establish an autonomous systems hub focused on production, integration, and future vehicle development. For the Marine Corps, the Mission Master SP offers a platform for examining how unmanned vehicles can carry supplies, improve expeditionary mobility, and limit troop exposure in dangerous environments.
