The decision comes in response to a significant regional escalation following a series of attacks between the United States and Iran, including a large missile and drone attack by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on a US military installation at Erbil International Airport. The US Embassy in Iraq warned Americans to be cautious and ready for unexpected developments in the security environment. Travelers may expect unexpected flight cancelations, temporary airspace restrictions, and border closures. The US Consulate General in Erbil encouraged Americans to establish an evacuation strategy and consider leaving if things worsened further. While US diplomatic posts remain operating, non-essential staff are subject to an ordered departure status. US citizens are also encouraged to follow local media and keep track of geopolitical developments and local security alerts. The US Embassy and Consulate General also asked Americans to ensure travel documents are up to date and secure an independent means of exiting the country. Americans should also register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to obtain real-time information and make it simpler for the embassy to find them in an emergency.
