US builds $50M hypersonic payload hub ahead of schedule to speed Mach 5+ flight testing

Kratos Defense & Security Solutions has completed construction of a new hypersonic payload integration facility in southern Indiana ahead of schedule, expanding U.S. infrastructure for next-generation flight testing as demand grows for advanced missile technologies. The $50 million Indiana Payload Integration Facility (IPIF), located near the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division in Crane, Indiana, gives Kratos additional capacity to support U.S. hypersonic weapons development. The company said the site will help increase the pace of Mach 5+ flight testing while strengthening the nation’s defense industrial base as the Pentagon accelerates advanced weapons programs. Faster flight testing Covering 68,000 square feet, the facility can simultaneously integrate, test, and prepare up to six experimental payloads for flight. Kratos designed the site to support programs such as the Multi-Service Advanced Capabilities Hypersonic Testbed (MACH-TB), allowing engineering teams to process multiple payloads at once instead of moving them through sequential workflows. Engineers will perform advanced manufacturing, payload integration and system testing before vehicles move to launch campaigns. The company expects the streamlined workflow to reduce bottlenecks and increase the frequency of hypersonic flight tests. Hypersonic weapons travel at speeds greater than Mach 5 while remaining highly maneuverable, making them significantly harder to detect and intercept than conventional missile systems. Expanding testing capacity is expected to help the Pentagon evaluate new designs more quickly and shorten development timelines. Growing Indiana operations The project also represents a major investment in southern Indiana. Kratos expects the facility to create more than 100 high-tech jobs, with an estimated average annual salary exceeding $80,000. Recruitment for engineering, manufacturing and technical positions is already underway. Mike Johns, vice president of Kratos SRE, said the facility fills an important gap in the nation’s hypersonic testing infrastructure. “The IPIF investment in southern Indiana brings online a national asset and critically needed infrastructure to rapidly scale the cadence of hypersonic testing in the United States,” Johns said. He added that the site will also bring together companies developing advanced hypersonic technologies, creating a central location for collaboration across the industry. Broader hypersonic strategy Kratos has expanded its presence in the hypersonics sector by developing both propulsion systems and flight vehicles instead of focusing on a single component. Its portfolio includes the Erinyes hypersonic flyer, along with the Dark Fury, Zeus and Oriole solid rocket motors, giving the company capabilities across multiple stages of hypersonic system development. Dave Carter, president of Kratos Defense & Rocket Support Services, said the Indiana investment aligns with the company’s strategy to establish a stronger defense manufacturing presence near Crane. “Our infrastructure expansion near the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division is part of our strategy to establish an advanced defense hub in Southern Indiana,” Carter said. He added that Kratos is building specialized facilities designed to strengthen U.S. defense and aerospace capabilities while supporting future hypersonic programs.
