The US Air Force has tested how quickly its nuclear missile force can transition from routine operations to a high-pressure combat scenario, conducting a four-day, no-notice exercise that included a simulated drone threat and the recapture of a missile launch facility. Called Sentinel Dragon 26-02, the commander-directed exercise ran from August 4 to 7, 2026, across units of the Air Force’s 20th Air Force. Unlike a conventional large-scale exercise, most participating personnel were given no advance warning. The setup was designed to show commanders how operations, maintenance, and security teams perform when they cannot spend days preparing for an inspection or exercise. “An effective nuclear deterrent must be ready 24/7/365,” said Maj. Gen. Colin Connor, commander of 20th Air Force. He described readiness as the force’s normal operating condition rather than something it builds up specifically for an exercise. Testing the force without a warning The defining feature of Sentinel Dragon was its lack of traditional preparation time. Only a restricted group of planners knew the exercise was approaching. Operational units therefore had to rely on their normal command-and-control systems, respond to unexpected developments, and solve problems as they emerged. The assessment focused on three primary areas. Simulator evaluations of missile operators, maintenance activities conducted under pressure, and a complex scenario requiring security forces to recapture a launch facility. The operator evaluations used Missile Procedures Trainer simulations based on governing directives and technical requirements. The evaluation focused on first-tour crew members, who make up a significant part of the operational force. The objective was not simply to see whether personnel knew what to do, but whether they could execute required procedures precisely while operating under pressure. Maj. Jared Lynd, chief of the 20th Air Force Exercise Branch, said the ability to conduct a complex exercise involving multiple wings without advance notice was one of its most important results. Simulated drone attack tests launch-site security The launch-facility recapture scenario, added another layer to the exercise by bringing security and air units together in a simulated tactical environment. Security forces were required to manage complex airspace, respond to a simulated drone threat, and coordinate with the 582nd Helicopter Group for tactical insertion and air support. The scenario was intended to test the ability of different elements to operate as a single force rather than treating missile security as an isolated ground mission. At the same time, operations and maintenance personnel worked in the launch capsule and in the field to keep the weapon system secure and mission-capable during the simulated response. The exercise therefore combined nuclear-mission procedures with conventional security challenges, including an unmanned-aircraft threat and the need to regain control of a compromised launch facility. Lessons will shape future training Sentinel Dragon was also designed to generate lessons for the Air Force’s future training program. The 20th Air Force said it will use observations from the exercise will be used to refine tactics and procedures. It also plans to standardize simulator scripts and training products across its missile wings. According to Air Force Global Strike Command, this could return hundreds of administrative man-hours to instructors by reducing the need for individual wings to develop and maintain similar training materials. That would let instructors spend more time on operational performance and warfighter training rather than administrative work. The exercise ultimately tested a simple but important premise for the US nuclear deterrent. Whether personnel responsible for operating, maintaining, and protecting the missile force can respond effectively when circumstances change without the luxury of a scheduled buildup period.
