Upcoming Adaptation Of Hit Fantasy Series Is The Witcher Meets Black Panther

An upcoming fantasy adaptation, which is based on a series of bestselling books, is the perfect combination of some of The Witcher and Black Panther's best storytelling tropes. The adaptation in question is set to premiere in 2027 and is already generating considerable excitement thanks to its acclaimed source material. When it comes to Netflix's take on The Witcher, the TV franchise is now starting to show signs of slowing down. It performed incredibly well in its first few installments, but it just has not been the same as Henry Cavill's departure. In contrast, the Black Panther franchise is seemingly entering a whole new phase. David Jonsson has been cast to play the new Black Panther, revealing the MCU's continued efforts to expand Wakanda's mythology and shift its focus to a new generation of characters. While only time will tell how these recent changes will pan out for both The Witcher and Black Panther, it is hard not to look forward to their future arcs. While waiting for them, though, viewers must also keep an eye on the upcoming adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi's Children of Blood and Bone. Children Of Blood & Bone Combines Elements Of Fantasy Classics, From The Witcher To Harry Potter Image via Paramount Pictures The themes and character beats from Children of Blood & Bone are very similar to those from other pieces of YA and fantasy classics like Harry Potter, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and The Witcher. Its parallels with The Witcher seem even more evident when one of its main characters, Zélie Adebola, is compared with Ciri (Cirilla of Cintra). While both characters hail from fundamentally different cultures, it is hard not to notice how they carry many similar physical traits and internal conflicts. For instance, just like Ciri’s ashen/white hair immediately marks her Elder Blood heritage, Zélie’s stark white hair identifies her as a divîner in Children of Blood and Bone. Zélie and Ciri possess distinct magical powers. While Zélie magical affinity is necromancy​​​​​​​, Ciri is portrayed as a "Source" and the Lady of Time and Space. However, both characters initially fear their powers because of their inability to control them. Owing to their abilities and bloodlines, both characters are forced into narratives where they must save the world. Children of Blood & Bone's portrayal of 10 distinct Maji clans also reminds one of the different element classes from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Some aspects of its magic system and its established rules also seem reminiscent of Harry Potter. Its central relic quests, where characters must gather scrolls and daggers, also come from classic fantasy quest achetypes. Just like Wakanda is portrayed as a pan-African synthesis blending real-world cultures​​​​​​​, Children of Blood and Bone's Orïsha​​​​​​​ is seemingly rooted in West African Yoruba mythology and language. A major story arc in both also revolves around royal families and the conflict in their internal ideologies. T’Challa, Shuri, and Ramonda hold royal authority, but their lineage faces internal reckonings through Killmonger in the first Black Panther movie. Similarly, Children of Blood and Bone portrays how King Saran rules through tyranny​​​​​​​ before his children split the dynasty due to contrasting ideologies. Both also dabble with themes surrounding the struggles of a prosperous nation in handling its wealth and the rise of the oppressed to reclaim what was stolen from them. While only time will tell whether Children of Blood and Bone's upcoming movie adaptation will be as big as The Witcher and Black Panther franchises, it certainly seems to have immense potential because of the strength of its source material.
