United Flyers Transfer Miles For Free By Closing A Pool—Avoiding More Than $700 In Fees

A United flyer needed 45,000 miles from their sister for an upgrade, but transferring them would have cost more than $700. They moved the miles for free by creating a mileage pool, having the sister leave the pool, and then closing it. The miles landed in their personal account, available to request the upgrade. That traveler report is from 2024. What’s useful now is the string of subsequent confirmations, including two in August 2026, both saying they dissolved the pool online. I covered United’s introduction of mileage pooling in March 2024. Up to five people can combine miles, which is useful when everyone’s balance is too small to book what they want. But a pool is a separate balance with its own restrictions. The interesting part is what happens when you dismantle it. Members who leave give up their contributed miles, which stay in the pool. When the leader dissolves the pool, its remaining balance is divided equally among the people still in it, including the leader. If everyone else has already left, there’s only one person to receive those miles. The person who should end up with the miles creates the pool as its leader, through United’s mileage pooling page. The other member accepts the invitation and waits 72 hours before contributing. They contribute the miles, then wait through the additional 24-hour pending period. The contributing member leaves. With several contributors, all of them leave first. Each should do this from their own account; the leader can’t simply remove them. Once the leader is the only person left, the leader dissolves the pool. Close a pool containing you and your spouse with 100,000 miles still in it, and the split is 50,000 apiece. Have your spouse leave first, then dissolve it, and the rresult is 100,000 miles in your account. You need at least four days to get through the initial waiting periods. Pooled miles have become more useful. United added most partner awards in June. And an eligible member can already use their better award pricing when redeeming directly from a pool. Dissolving can be useful for combining miles and using them for upgrades that pooled miles can’t buy. After dissolution, all participants including the leader should plan on a 90-day wait before joining or creating another pool. When a member leaves, the old pool also can’t accept a new member during that period. At some point United may address this, because it’s a way around paying them fees. Topics on this page
