It is the carrier's sixth-busiest hub based on passengers, flights, seats for sale, and available seat miles. Of course, IAD's development is somewhat limited by Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), which is not far away. In 2026, OAG data shows that United has 74% of IAD's flights, which means it is very much a fortress hub. But it is not the hub at which the carrier is most dominant. That is Houston Intercontinental, at which United has 81% of services. Due a huge use of regional jets, United has fewer seats per flight at IAD (124) than any other hub except Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD; 120). United Begins Four Domestic Routes From Washington Dulles Credit: Flickr Schedule analysis for 2026 and 2027 shows that the following four domestic routes have joined United's map from IAD. Only one (Owensboro) has not previously had any nonstop IAD flights with any carrier, not just the Star Alliance member, which makes the launch particularly good to see. The city will welcome United in October 2026, with routes to IAD and ORD. Two of the other markets were last served between 32 and 35 years ago, with their return being highly noteworthy. They include Orange County, which is renowned for its strict noise abatement procedures and very short main runway of just 5,700 feet (an apt 1,737 meters). To overcome these things, the 126-seat Boeing 737-700, with its strong takeoff performance, is deployed. The 737-700 is primarily also flown between EWR and Orange County, although the MAX 8 is deployed too. Start Or Resumption Date (2026 & 2027 Only) United From IAD To... Competing directly with Icelandair, it is the first time that the airport pair has had two operators since WOW Air pulled out two years ago. Obviously, United partly focuses on the local IAD-KEF market, which booking data via OAG Traffic Analyzer shows had 48,000 round-trip passengers in the 12 months to July 2026. It'll also carry many passengers elsewhere via IAD. It will, to a certain degree, cannibalize its existing operations from EWR and ORD to KEF, but, importantly, growing its share of the total pie. We'll take a closer look at its initial performance later in the article. At 2,432 nautical miles (4,504 km), it is United's new second-shortest Boeing 757 route to Europe, after EWR to KEF. It is the carrier's third-longest 757 route from IAD this summer, after Edinburgh and Dublin. In comparison, Icelandair uses the 737 MAX 8 and MAX 9 to IAD this year. In total, the pair have 181,000 round-trip seats in 2026, which makes it the fourth-largest volume to date (after 2017, 2019, 2023, and 2024). In May and June, shortly after United inaugurated service between IAD and KEF, the carrier transported 7,748 round-trip passengers, of which 6,400 (83%) connected at IAD. Context is essential. When related to seats for sale, the initial load factor was just 55.3%. As usual, caveats underpin this. It'll be fascinating to see how the route performs in the peak summer. If the results are also surprisingly low, expect changes for 2027. Of course, fare information is unknown. Icelandair (with its very well-established operation to IAD) filled 84.9% of seats in the same two months. The carrier had 19% fewer flights year-over-year. The frequency fell from 10 weekly services to a double daily operation in May/June last year, to ten weekly departures in those months in 2026. However, as seats fell even more (-21%), the load factor grew slightly. United's entry probably resulted in lower yields, but partly, if not fully, offset by the much lower capacity.
