Under New Law, Albania’s Mountains Risk Same Fate as Coast, Critics Say

While all eyes are on the damage caused by tourism construction on Albania’s coast, the government has passed a law designed to boost investment in the mountains too, much to the concern of environmentalists. Besjana Guri is a regular at the protests outside the office of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama. But while they began in response to a luxury tourism development on the coast, Guri’s personal beef is with Rama’s ‘Mountain Package’ - a law designed to grow tourism in Albania’s mountains too. As head of the eco group Lumi [River], Guri has been collecting signatures to overturn the law, adopted in March and which she and her fellow activists say represents a threat to the environment.
