Ukraine’s Parliament Dismisses Prosecutor General

Ukraine’s parliament voted on Tuesday, Sept. 15, to dismiss Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko, approving President Volodymyr Zelensky’s motion to end his tenure.According to the Judicial and Legal Newspaper, 317 lawmakers supported the dismissal.JOIN US ON TELEGRAMFollow our coverage of the war on the @Kyivpost_official.Parliament approves Zelensky’s motionThe vote formally ended Kravchenko’s tenure as Ukraine’s prosecutor general.Zelensky had told lawmakers that “the only path” for the prosecutor general was dismissal, according to the Ukrainian-language report.On Monday, Sept. 14, Zelensky submitted the motion and urged parliament to approve it without delay. He also signed a decree suspending Kravchenko from office for the duration of martial law.Dismissal follows anti-corruption investigationKravchenko had submitted his resignation amid an investigation by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO), known as Operation Carthage. He denied the allegations against him.Kravchenko himself was never formally charged – the Operation Carthage probe targeted a criminal network inside the Prosecutor General’s Office accused of taking bribes to shield fraudulent call centers and laundering the money.Kravchenko also said on Monday that he had signed a notice of suspicion against NABU Director Semen Kryvonos. NABU and SAPO rejected his accusations.Following parliament’s vote, Kravchenko no longer serves as Ukraine’s prosecutor general.
