Ukraine’s Ukrposhta postal service and drone maker Athlon Avia have issued a new set of postage stamps documenting the history of the Furia, Ukraine’s first fixed-wing reconnaissance drone. The six-stamp sheet traces the Furia’s development from 2014, when Russia’s war against Ukraine began, to its use today by more than 100 brigades across Ukraine’s Defense Forces.JOIN US ON TELEGRAMFollow our coverage of the war on the @Kyivpost_official. The stamps, along with an illustrated envelope and postcard, were presented at Kyiv’s War Museum ahead of Ukraine’s Defenders and Defenders’ Day and Veterans’ Day. “Over more than 10 years, much has changed, but one thing has remained unchanged – the people who continue this work,” said Artem Vyunnyk, co-founder of Athlon Avia. He said the company wanted the Furia’s history to become part of Ukraine’s national history rather than remain only in its archives. The Furia underwent state testing and was subsequently adopted by Ukraine’s National Guard and Armed Forces. The drone is used for aerial reconnaissance, identifying enemy positions and adjusting artillery fire. One of the earliest combat chapters in the Furia’s history dates back to 2014, when the first reconnaissance drone was delivered to the Donbas battalion. It was used during Ukraine’s operation to liberate Popasna in the Luhansk Oblast, serving as the “eyes” of Ukrainian artillery. The stamp designs include archival photographs from Athlon Avia showing the Furia and its operators during some of its first combat deployments. Another stamp features Taras “Sheriff” Vynarchyk, a veteran and Athlon Avia engineer who previously commanded a unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) battery with the 15th Separate Artillery Reconnaissance Brigade “Black Forest” in 2022-23. After being wounded and leaving military service, Vynarchyk joined Athlon Avia, where he continued working with the Furia and used his battlefield experience in the drone’s further development. “For the museum, it is important to preserve not only individual objects, but also the context in which they appeared,” said Yurii Savchuk, director general of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War. In 2026, a Furia aircraft was transferred to the War Museum for a future exhibition dedicated to modern military technologies. The postal issue was designed by Ukrainian artist Yurii Denysenkov, who works across painting, video and installation. His work focuses on themes including memory, fear, ruins, and human experience. Athlon Avia has been developing and manufacturing unmanned aerial systems since 2014. Its flagship A1-SM Furia system is used by Ukraine’s Defense Forces for aerial reconnaissance, artillery adjustment, and other battlefield missions.
