Attacking Kremlin troops suffered record-breaking single-day losses for the entire Russo-Ukrainian War, two Ukrainian military sources said on Thursday. During the 24-hour period between Oct. 21-22, Russian forces suffered at least 2,250 men killed or seriously wounded in combat across the war’s 1,000-1,250 km (about 600-800 miles) fighting front, according to morning figures published by Ukraine’s General Staff.JOIN US ON TELEGRAMFollow our coverage of the war on the @Kyivpost_official. The numbers broke the previous wartime record of 2,200 set in December 2024, and exceeded the most recent record-setting day for casualties – Oct. 18, 2026 – by at least 150 men, General Staff records showed. Russia does not publish casualty figures from combat in Ukraine, but its state information outlets insist Russian assaults are successful and suffer moderate but acceptable casualties, while accusing Ukraine of inflating claimed kill counts. Practically all units in the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) say their estimates of Russian losses are accurate because engagements and images of dead and wounded Russian soldiers are recorded in real time by drones. Some but not all of that content is made public. The commander of Ukraine’s drone forces, Major Robert Brovdi, in a Thursday statement announced his pilots and maintainers had, over the same 24-hour period, “eliminated” 680 Russian soldiers in strikes with first-person view (FPV) and bomber drones, a single-day wartime record for the country’s Unmanned Systems Forces (USF). The record Kremlin losses were likely the result of heavy Russian infantry attacks in the eastern Donetsk region aiming to break into the fortress city of Dobropilliya, according to Ukrainian milbloggers. According to statements published by the overall command headquarters in that sector, Ukraine’s 1st Army Corps “Azov,” the preferred Russian assault tactic has been to send small groups of infantrymen into open fields on foot to infiltrate Ukrainian positions and dig in. Dense Ukrainian observation and strike drone coverage of fields, woodlines and villages into which the Russian foot soldiers have been attempting to advance has at times eviscerated Russian assault units, said Ihor Obolonsky, commander of Ukraine’s 2nd Army Corps “Khartiya,” in a Thursday statement.“We are neutralizing the enemy’s numerical superiority and conducting meticulously planned operations that strengthen the front line,” Obolonsky said, citing observations of his troops deployed to the northeastern Kharkiv region and southern Kherson region. “Over the past few days, the enemy has suffered record losses in manpower; in some sectors, irreversible losses have reached as high as 74%. This is the price the Russian Federation is paying for the war it launched against Ukraine,” he added. Ukrainian milblogger Vasyl Pekhno, in a Thursday analysis, estimated that Russian total combat losses for October 2026 had reached 35,950 soldiers and were on track to approach or exceed 50,000 permanent losses – a figure exceeding Russia’s capacity to recruit or conscript new soldiers to replace them.Ukraine’s military, thanks to its powerful drone forces, is holding its defensive lines well and conducting effective counterattacks. But those successes, Pekhno said, come from strong USF drone support for conventional formations along the front. He called on Ukraine’s military to beef up its frontline infantry and tank units with more drones and pilots, so that USF-run unmanned aircraft strikes can hit deeper behind Russian lines.“Our military needs to undergo further transformation: the USF should be conducting deeper operations – hunting down enemy pilots, striking logistics, and so on – rather than chasing after individual ‘f*ckers’ [low-level targets],” Pekhno wrote.“That task should fall to the line brigades. Yet, it is currently quite clear that not all brigades are fully prepared to take complete responsibility for the sector of the front entrusted to them. Consequently, the SBS is stepping in to cover the gap,” he added.US President Donald Trump on Tuesday claimed, inaccurately, that AFU forces are unable to stop Russian attacks and that Russian manpower reserves are effectively bottomless. According to the US leader, Ukraine’s attempts to defend itself are futile.Speaking to reporters in Oslo on Monday, President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected the idea that Ukraine is losing the war to Russia and said his government was looking for a ceasefire to reduce Ukrainian citizen deaths and injuries, and to allow his country to move towards reconstruction.Effective Ukrainian combat operations are shutting down Russian attacks and inflicting heavy casualties, directly assisting him in peace talks, he said.“Of course, we are not losing this war. But we are losing people. Because of the Russian attacks, we’re losing people and time,” Zelensky said.“It’s such a pity, because our children don’t have a real life and childhood. Not only children, but all people. That’s why we need to end this war as quickly as possible. I hope that our partners, Americans and Europeans, will help us,” he continued.“God bless, our strong soldiers stay strong on the battlefield. It helps me stay strong during any kind of negotiations.” Stefan Korshak is the Kyiv Post Senior Defense Correspondent.
