UK, Ukraine Sign New AI Defense Agreement

Ukraine signed an artificial-intelligence (AI) defense partnership with the UK on Monday, Aug. 24, granting British researchers access to Ukraine’s Avengers AI Labs battlefield-data platform to support the joint development of new military technologies. Britain, the first foreign partner to gain access to Ukraine’s Avengers AI Labs, announced earlier on Monday that it would allow a defense company MBDA to declassify information on British components used in Storm Shadow/SCALP cruise missiles, part of an effort to help Ukraine and France establish local missile production. Joint defense projects The newly signed deal forms a key part of the UK and Ukraine’s 100 Year Partnership. “Britain and Ukraine are the closest of partners,” said British Minister for AI, Kanishka Narayan. “Ukraine’s extraordinary courage on the battlefield has been matched by remarkable technological ingenuity,” he continued. The partnership will focus on defense and national security, while bringing together engineers, companies, researchers, and military specialists from both countries to develop and field AI-enabled capabilities. Several pilot projects have already been launched with three British startups – Bristol’s Sintela, Oxford’s Mind Foundry and London’s Skyral – according to the official UK government website. The projects will include using fiber-optic cables as AI-enabled sensors to help protect military facilities and researching low-power AI chips for drones and autonomous systems. “The technology could be rolled out to protect airports, prisons and even railways and energy plants in the future,” according to the British government. Battlefield data access Operational data and insights from Ukraine’s battlefield will now be provided to the UK, including real-world data intended to train AI models collected by thousands of daylight cameras and infrared sensors across the battlefield. The sensors and cameras capture various objects – such as artillery, aerial targets, infantry, and air defense systems, including Shahed drones and reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) – and feed the information back to the Avengers AI Labs to train new AI models. “The deal will first focus on defense and national security,” the British government said, adding that it has the “potential to revolutionize all parts of public life, from air traffic control to train systems.” In return, Britain will provide Ukraine with support from its technology companies, researchers, and universities to accelerate AI solutions for urgent military needs. Through joint cooperation, the countries aim to develop next-generation AI-enabled armed forces while working on cybersecurity and interoperability with NATO partners. The announcement comes as allies gather in Kyiv to show support for Ukraine and press for additional air-defense supplies, amid a critical shortage of Patriot interceptor missiles.
