| Senior Lifestyle Reporter Published October 2, 2026 5:31pm Updated October 2, 2026 5:31pm It’s a UK supermarket first (Picture: UNP http://www.unp.co.uk) There have been some interesting technological advances in supermarkets of late, from human-sized robots roaming the aisles to the introduction of the AI smart trolley. Many supermarkets have also partnered with brands like InPost to bring delivery lockers to their stores to make customers’ lives a little easier. But Morrisons is taking this a step further with a new trial at one of its locations. The retailer has launched new multi-temperature grocery lockers in a bid to improve the Click & Collect service and cut down customer wait times. The lockers are different temperatures(Picture: UNP http://www.unp.co.uk) How do the new lockers work? The lockers, by StrongPoint, have been used across Europe for more than a decade, but this is the first time they’ve featured at a UK supermarket. Morrisons says the technology will remove the need for customers to park in a collection bay and wait for staff to bring orders out to their car. Instead, the collection process will be ‘seamless’, with the lockers being pre-loaded before the customer arrives. When they get there, they simply enter a six-digit collection code to unlock the door and collect their items, which will be pre-packed in paper bags. Morrisons says this will be a ‘seamless’ shopping experience (Picture: Matthew Horwood/Getty Images Shoppers can use the service for everything from a daily top-up to a weekly shop, as large lockers will be able to hold up to three bags of shopping, while smaller chilled or frozen compartments can hold one or two bags, depending on capacity. The temperature-controlled units will keep chilled products at 3 to 5C and frozen products at -18C to -20C. Ambient grocery units are maintained at 16C to ensure freshness. Morrisons has also added communication technology, with a help button in the locker terminal, so customers can speak directly to staff in the store who are wearing headsets, if support is needed. And don’t think this will be a sneaky way to order booze and bypass the ID checks – anyone ordering age-restricted products will still be required to pass the Challenge 25 checks. The system flags the items to staff, and the locker will stay locked until a colleague approves the item. Would you use Click & Collect grocery lockers? Where are the lockers? Currently, they’re only being trialed at one Morrisons store, in Skipton, North Yorkshire. The retailer says it picked this location because it’s a ‘high-volume’ Click & Collect shop with a full online offer. Charlotte Exell, group online director at Morrisons, added: ‘We know customers want Click & Collect to be quick, convenient and flexible, and our new locker solution is designed to be exactly that. ‘By bringing StrongPoint’s proven technology to our stores, we can offer more collection slots while removing the wait for colleagues to bring orders to customers’ cars. ‘We’re excited to bring a simpler, more seamless Click & Collect experience to our Skipton customers.’ Do you have a story you’d like to share?
