UIL executive director offers John Meredith case facts after eligibility ruling

One of the stories of the summer in Texas high school football was the ruling that Fort Worth North Crowley (Texas) cornerback John Meredith would be ruled ineligible for his senior year. Meredith transferred from Euless Trinity (Texas), but was ruled ineligible after his transfer was deemed to have been for athletic purposes. Meredith is ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the state, No. 1 at his position, and No. 2 nationally, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings, which is a weighted average that utilizes all major recruiting media companies. [ $19.99 gets you a FULL year of On3 | Rivals national coverage ] During today’s Texas High School Coaches Association panel, University Interscholastic League executive director Dr. Jamey Harrison appeared, reaffirming the situation, stating that the cases of Meredith and Denton Ryan Raiders (Texas) quarterback Colton Nussmier were both outliers, according to a report from Dave Campbell’s Carter Yates. “UIL Executive Director Dr. Jamey Harrison said that two things got lost in the conversation and vast publicity around John Meredith and Colton Nussmeier being ruled ineligible for varsity competition after transferring for athletic purposes.” Yates shared at the event. “When you have a case or two or five that get some attention, people lose sight of the forest for the trees. They don’t realize that during the 25-26 school year, the number is gonna be somewhere around 17-18,000 students who are new to a UIL high school and want to play sports.” Harrison was reported to have said at the event. “You go through that and look at the number of students who were ruled by a lower committee to have changed schools for athletic reasons, who then appealed that decision to the state executive committee, and less than 15 will be ineligible for varsity participation,” Harrison stated. In his comments, the UIL executive director stated that both Meredith and Nussmeier would be eligible to return to their former schools. Nussmeier, the brother of NFL quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, initially transferred from Flower Mound Marcus (Texas). A four-star recruit, currently committed to Georgia, completed 100 of 167 passes for 1,390 yards and 12 touchdowns for the Marauders in 2025. After transferring to the Raiders, the class of 2027 quarterback was also ruled by the DEC to have transferred for athletic purposes. Following the recent statements, both Meredith and Nussmeier have stayed put at their current schools, set to sit out their senior year unless the situation changes. The five-star corner is set to play for the Texas Longhorns, currently committed to play for Steve Sarkisian in 2027. “Meredith’s combination of size and outstanding athleticism gives him a prototypical physical skill set as an outside corner. The Arlington (Texas) Trinity product raised his game when the lights were brightest at Under Armour, effectively locking down his side of the field and making plays when targeted.” Meredith’s scouting report reads. Additionally, another topic that came up at today’s event was a proposed rule change that was suggested early in the summer, surrounding the state of Texas high school 7 on 7 camps. Currently, the rules state that high school coaches are not permitted to coach or provide any instruction to their players during these camps. Instead, volunteers and parents handle the coaching of these skill events. “There are always conversations about that sort of thing, but I don’t see any momentum behind it. What we have found from coaches in general, again, this is not unanimous, but I think a strong consensus among coaches is that we allow them to do enough.” Harrison shared during today’s conference. Finally, other discussions held were surrounding the PAPF form. According to UIL rulings, all schools are required to fill out a Previous Athletic Participation form ahead of all transfers, a system that was criticized by Texas high school football coaches throughout the summer. “When that form (Previous Athletic Participation) is being completed, it needs to be completed with great fidelity and great honesty. If it’s not, then we have an input that is flawed. When you have flawed inputs, you may end up with flawed outputs.” Harrison explained, as reported by the Dallas News. Following today’s conference, with discussions surrounding NIL, an agency roster, and the transfer of some of the top student athletes in the state of Texas, including Meredith, the annual Texas High School Coaches Association panel provided a significant amount of information going into the upcoming season, which starts in just over a month.
