UGC NET Result 2026: Is NET enough for PhD admission? Know the rules

Can a UGC NET score be used to apply for a PhD? The answer is yes, but it depends on the category under which a candidate has qualified and the admission rules of the university.The National Testing Agency (NTA) has classified UGC NET-qualified candidates into three categories. Category 1 candidates are eligible for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), Assistant Professor and PhD admission. Category 2 candidates are eligible for Assistant Professor and PhD admission, while Category 3 candidates are eligible for PhD admission only.UGC NET 2026: HOW DOES PHD ADMISSION WORK?For candidates in Category 2 and Category 3, the UGC NET score can be used as the entrance test component for PhD admission. The final selection is based on 70 per cent weightage to the NET score and 30 per cent to the interview or viva voce conducted by the concerned university or higher education institution (HEI).However, qualifying UGC NET does not guarantee a PhD seat. Candidates must apply to universities offering PhD programmes in their subject and meet the eligibility and admission requirements prescribed by the institution. Candidates who have qualified for PhD admission should therefore check individual university notifications for details on available seats, research areas, eligibility criteria, application deadlines and interview schedules.The validity of the UGC NET marks for PhD admission for Category 2 and Category 3 candidates is one year from the date of declaration of the result.Candidates should check the category mentioned on their UGC NET scorecard before applying.
