Uefa threaten Gianni Infantino and Joshua Kushner with legal action over abandoned World Cup sale plan

UEFA is considering legal action after Gianni Infantino’s failed plan to flog shares in the World Cup, a letter sent on Friday says. The Fifa supremo, 56, sent shockwaves through football when it emerged he wanted to sell stakes in the sport’s biggest tournament to private investors. And Uefa, who declared a loss of confidence in the Swiss millionaire, declared that it was mulling taking the matter to court. Sign up for the Football newsletter Thank you! European football’s governing body, headed by Aleksander Ceferin, released a scathing statement and confirmed its members would BOYCOTT the World Cup if the bombshell plans were signed off. Uefa then went one step further – warning Infantino that he is at risk of being sued. Joshua Kushner, Greg Maffei, JP Morgan and OpenEconomic could also be dragged into legal proceedings thanks to their respective roles in the doomed venture. A letter sent to Infantino on Friday – and first seen by the Telegraph – said: “Uefa hereby gives formal notice that it is actively considering legal action, arbitration, and/or regulatory complaints arising out of and in connection with the FFE plan proposed by Fifa and all related matters as further described below. “You and Fifa are required to take immediate steps to identify, locate, and preserve all documents and electronically stored information described in this notice that are in your or Fifa’s possession, custody, or control. “These obligations arise independently of any internal retention policy you or your organisation maintain and supersede any routine document destruction or deletion policies that would otherwise apply. The billionaire was on course to be joined by Maffei in the controversial move. JP Morgan and OpenEconomics were involved in the hunt for potential investors. And they have all been warned not to ditch any material relating to the botched plans. Ceferin and Infantino have been at loggerheads Credit: Getty The Fifa supremo has vowed to keep his job Credit: AFP The letter added: “Uefa puts you on formal notice that any destruction, deletion, alteration, concealment, or loss of relevant materials following receipt of this notice – or following any earlier date on which you were, or reasonably should have been, aware that proceedings were anticipated – may constitute spoliation of evidence. “Uefa reserves all rights to seek appropriate remedies in the proceedings for any such destruction or loss, including applications for adverse inference orders, sanctions, and costs against the responsible party or parties.” Infantino, who has vowed to cling on to his job, was given five business days to confirm he understood the stark warning and would not get rid of any potential evidence. It is not known whether Uefa’s letter contributed to the decision to abandon the project on Friday evening. Comment now
