WATFORD’s mascot left fans in stitches as he poked fun at Southampton fans during their Championship opener. Harry the Hornet was spotted hiding behind the goalpost and holding its hands to its eyes as though looking through a pair of binoculars. Watford’s mascot Harry the Hornet recreated the infamous spygate picture in front of Southampton’s travelling fans The gesture was in reference to Southampton’s ‘spygate’ scandal, where a member of Southampton staff was spotted in a similar pose as they recorded a Middlesbrough training session ahead of their play-off clash. But in an extended display of antagonising, the hornet began sarcastically holding its hands up in apology before breaking into a dance in front of the away end. Fans on social media were delighted with the playful antics. One wrote: “This is the type of s***housery football needs back.” Another joked: “Grown men on strings by a cartoon hornet.” And a third fan quipped: “Can we make this a tradition for all Championship mascots when they play the spies please.” Southampton ended up piling the misery on their own fans after falling to a 2-1 loss at Vicarage Road.
