When he returned to Ayresome Gardens to walk his other dog he came across the group again. The victim moved out of the way to let them pass but CCTV shows the man in the group “strike the pensioner to his face” Cainan Lonsdale, prosecuting, said. The pensioner punched back only for the man to “make another blow to his face” knocking him to the ground. Thompson is then seen dragging the victim onto the pavement from the grass verge while Yates “is stamping and kicking him” as the group gathered around, the barrister said. The victim’s pockets were rifled through and his satchel was taken, but later discarded when the gang found it only held a dog lead, bags, a hat and gloves. The pensioner went home and his partner took him to hospital after seeing his injuries. Most read in The Sun He said his “vision was affected” and photos showed bruising, swelling and a large cut on his cheek. The women were both found with drugs when they were arrested. Yates, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to attempted robbery; assault occasioning actual bodily harm; and the possession of a class A drug. Thompson, of New Street in Thornaby, admitted attempted robbery; assault occasioning actual bodily harm; two counts of the possession of a class C drug; and failing to surrender. Judge Richard Wright acknowledged the difficult backgrounds of the two women and considered their upbringings mitigating circumstances. He told the pair at the sentencing hearing: “Yates – you took the lead in kicking and stamping on him. “Thompson – you dragged him about. This was a terrifying ordeal for him.” “When you attack a 70 year old man, in the dark, who was doing no more than walking his dog. “When you put him to the ground and kick and stamp on him – you go to prison” he said.
