Two Victoria Police officers charged with assault over 2025 arrest

Victoria's anti-corruption watchdog has charged two police officers with assault following the arrest of an Indigenous man in August last year.The Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC) launched an investigation into allegations that a senior constable and a sergeant unlawfully assaulted a man during an arrest in Melbourne's east.In a statement, IBAC said the senior constable is alleged to have unlawfully hit the man in the head with a taser and has been charged with aggravated assault with a weapon.The sergeant is alleged to have unlawfully struck the man in the head with their knee. The sergeant has since been charged with unlawful assault.Victoria Police said it was notified of the charges on Wednesday, and that both accused officers were continuing to work in their current roles.The two officers will front Ringwood Magistrates' Court next month.The investigation by IBAC's Focused Police Complaints Team (FPCT) is the latest in a string of probes into alleged misconduct by members of Victoria Police.Last year, the FPCT assessed 105 complaints against Victoria Police and launched 28 investigations, laying charges against one police officer.
