Sign in to your ScreenRant account Marvel reveals two mutant squads for its new X-Men continuity, with Magneto and Gambit as their respective leaders. Throughout the decades, leadership of the X-Men typically changes hands between a few iconic field commanders. Charles Xavier, Cyclops, Storm, Magneto, Emma Frost, and Wolverine are all experienced leaders of mainstream X-Men teams, and other heroes like Angel, Rogue, Cable, and Kitty Pryde have all been in important leadership roles, commanding other mutant squads. At least once in their superhero career, the X-Men's most famous members have found themselves having to carry their teammates to victory. Wolverine has historically overshadowed the rest of the X-Men due to his massive real-world popularity and solo marketability. Particularly since the 2000s live-action Fox X-Men movie franchise made Wolverine a Hollywood icon, Logan has pushed Cyclops into the background. However, Marvel's upcoming mutant slate suggests a dramatic course correction. Marvel Studios' highly anticipated X-Men live-action reboot is dividing its spotlight across multiple mutant stars, with Kit Connor's Scott Summers at the center. In the comics, X-Men, X-Men United, and The Uncanny X-Men continue to balance Wolverine's solo and group appearances with other icons' own stories and the introduction of new mutant heroes. Meanwhile, Jonathan Hickman is spearheading a dark reinvention of mutant lore in the horror-fueled Midnight Universe with Midnight X-Men, which launches with two already established groups of mutant heroes. Marvel Reveals The First Two Midnight X-Men Teams Midnight X-Men #3; Written By Jonathan Hickman; Art By Matteo Della Fonte Ahead of the Midnight Universe's launch on October 7, Marvel has released an official first look at three Midnight titles' third issues. The preview pages for Midnight Spider-Man and Midnight Fantastic Four tease their respective heroes' new, horror-themed origin stories, and the preview pages for Midnight X-Men #1 establish two distinct mutant teams. A bearded Magneto leads a squad composed of his three children Polaris, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver, plus someone who appears to be Havok. Meanwhile, Gambit leads a team that features Psylocke, Glob Herman, and a hero whose costume resembles Vulcan's. Both Midnight Spider-Man and Midnight Fantastic Four present visibly different versions of their titular protagonists. Peter Parker goes full body-horror as his body is torn apart by a huge spider, and the Fantastic Four wear collared jackets and large goggles, with what seems to be a black-haired Sue Storm and a bald Ben Grimm. Midnight X-Men's mutant characters look quite similar to their traditional counterparts, but this may be a misdirection, as the real meaning of the "Midnight" title may still be awaiting them at this point. The only big differences visible in the preview pages are Magneto's beard and Scarlet Witch's gray costume. The Midnight X-Men Finally Address Important Mutant Relationships Midnight X-Men Might Explore Forgotten Family Dynamics The fact that the first X-Men characters revealed for Midnight X-Men are Magneto's family and two potential Summers siblings suggests that this new Marvel timeline will place special focus on family relationships. One of the biggest unresolved controversies in mainstream X-Men lore is the retconned familial connection between Magneto and the Maximoff siblings, who have jumped back and forth between being and not being his children. While they technically remain unrelated to him on Earth-616, the Maximoff twins and Polaris being Magneto's biological children might be a key plot point in the Midnight Universe. Likewise, the potential appearance of Havok and Vulcan, on different teams no less, teases fresh exploration of the Summer siblings' history. Recently in Marvel's main universe, Alex Summers revived X-Factor, while Gabriel Summers has barely been acknowledged since the fall of Krakoa. Cyclops' brothers rarely take center stage, let alone interact with each other. Midnight X-Men might change this and perhaps even pit the Summers siblings against each other. Besides, the Midnight X-Men #1 cover features Cyclops on the cover, and a variant cover features Jean Grey being bitten by a vampire Storm. Marvel's Midnight line launches October 7. Midnight X-Men #3 is available December 16 from Marvel Comics.
