Two girls leave for school in UP, attempt suicide at man's house; one dies

A class 11 student allegedly died by suicide while her friend survived after the duo attempted to hang themselves at a house in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district, police said. The incident took place on Thursday.The second girl survived after the noose around her neck broke, causing her to fall to the ground. The police said the suspected suicide appears to be linked to a love affair between one of the girls and a local young man, but all possible angles were being investigated.Both teenagers had left their respective homes for school that morning but never arrived. After being alerted by the school authorities, their families began searching for them.Their families later learnt that one of them was allegedly in a relationship with a young man and had gone to his house with her friend. After reaching his address, the two families found the door was locked from the inside and there was no response despite repeated knocks. The commotion caused a crowd to gather at the spot.The families eventually managed to enter the house through another door. Upon entering, they found one of the students hanging from a noose, while the other was lying on the floor motionless. Subsequently, the police arrived at the scene and rushed the two girls to the hospital, where one of them was declared dead. The other had noose marks around her neck and was administered urgent medical care."The matter appears to be related to a dispute over a love affair. Further legal action will be taken on the basis of the family's complaint and the post-mortem report," local Circle Officer Vikas Pratap Singh Chauhan was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.According to the police, the young man whose house the students had visited lives with his father and has been absconding since the incident. Efforts are underway to trace him.No one else was found inside the house when the survivor and her friend's body were discovered.
