EXCLUSIVE: Anthony Mackie promises big things to come from Twisted Metal season 3. The two-time Emmy nominee leads the Peacock series adaptation of Sony's hit action video game franchise as John Doe, an amnesiac delivery driver in a post-apocalyptic America who grows close with the foul-mouthed Quiet, played by Stephanie Beatriz, while trying to survive the chaotic new world. Season 2 notably introduced the eponymous car combat tournament, spearheaded by Anthony Carrigan's Calypso, who promises its winner their ultimate wish. Some four months after its predecessor's finale, Twisted Metal season 3 was finally confirmed by Peacock, albeit with a few major creative changes. Original showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith was revealed to be replaced by The Boys alum David Reed, while original star Mike Mitchell also confirmed he would not be returning for the new season, reportedly being let go amid the overhaul. Now, in an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns for his new Audible sci-fi audio drama Exoplanet, Anthony Mackie has offered an update on Twisted Metal season 3. The executive producer/star, who eagerly expressed that "I love this show" and the "ridiculous nature" of its plot and "stupidity I get to experience every day on set," confirmed that "we just wrapped" production on the next season of the show. Mackie went on to tease that, after the widespread acclaim of Twisted Metal season 2, the show's new and returning creative team sought to "elevate the third season," subsequently having fun in "figuring out ways to blow people up and kill s--t," while also looking to "put it on a whole 'nother level." Moreover, the star teased the show's returning players, particularly the villainous Calypso: Anthony Mackie: We were able to get everybody back, and we were able to evolve the story so much more. And [we were] lucky enough to get Anthony Carrigan back. It's just a really fun season. I feel like if you watch season 2 from season 1, you see, "Wow, there's really something happening here." And season 3 just goes off the richter, man. And Stephanie Beatriz is just an awesome partner. I feel like we're a great duo, man. Everything is just rock-paper-scissors to see who's gonna get punched in the face next. [Chuckles] You get to see all of that again in season 3. So, it's amazing. Mackie's confirmation that Twisted Metal season 3 has wrapped filming, which originally kicked off in June, marks an encouraging sign for the show's return timeline. Looking at prior seasons of the show, season 3 actually ran a little longer, coming in just over three months with its production, which, per Mackie's comments, could point to even bigger setpieces requiring more work. As for the turnaround time between the end of production and releases, Twisted Metal has actually been steadily picking up its speed with each season. Its debut episodes took roughly 11 months to begin streaming on Peacock after filming wrapped in May 2022, whereas season 2 shortened that to a nine-month gap. If it stays on track with the latter set of episodes, season 3 should very well maintain its late July release tradition in 2027. It is interesting that Mackie indicates the show was "lucky" to get Carrigan back for Calypso going into season 3, given Twisted Metal season 2's ending still painted him as the central villain for the series going forward. With John and Quiet having been framed for the death of the Insider spectator stand that the tournament boss did himself, and having his long-lost sister transformed in the ultra-powerful Minion, the former ended the season with the plan to hunt Calypso down and kill him to stop everything. While the exact nature of his return is still unclear, Carrigan's Calypso isn't the only major villain to look forward to going into Twisted Metal season 3, as Mark Hamill joined the cast at the start of production as Pope Charlie Kane, father to Will Arnett and Joe Seanoa's Sweet Tooth. Given how twisted the fan-favorite character is, and much of his origin story still a mystery, Kane's arrival is sure to bring a very threatening new presence to the post-apocalyptic series when it returns.
