Twisha death case: CBI says husband's mental cruelty left her with no choice

(File Photo: ITG)The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has alleged in its chargesheet that sustained mental cruelty by husband Samarth Singh and mother-in-law Giribala Singh drove 24-year-old Twisha Sharma to die by suicide, claiming she was left with "no choice except to end her life."The chargesheet also cites counselling records, WhatsApp messages and witness statements as part of the evidence gathered during the investigation.According to the CBI, Twisha was subjected to repeated psychological harassment after her marriage.Investigators alleged that Samarth Singh frequently humiliated and verbally abused her, while Giribala Singh allegedly encouraged such behaviour and shielded her son whenever Twisha complained. The agency claimed the two acted with a common intention to inflict mental cruelty over an extended period.The chargesheet states that Twisha became pregnant in April 2026 but was uncertain about continuing the pregnancy because of the alleged abuse and the deteriorating state of her marriage. The CBI claimed that disagreements over the pregnancy further intensified tensions within the family. According to the investigation, Twisha later decided to terminate the pregnancy, a decision that allegedly led to further conflict with her husband and in-laws.The agency has also referred to several WhatsApp conversations and phone calls in which Twisha allegedly told her parents and relatives that she felt trapped, emotionally distressed and wanted to leave her matrimonial home.The chargesheet states that she repeatedly sought help from her family, complained of continuous mental harassment and expressed a desire to rebuild her career by finding a job outside Bhopal.A significant part of the investigation relates to the couple's counselling sessions. According to the CBI, during one consultation Samarth Singh informed a psychiatrist that he and Twisha consumed marijuana.The chargesheet says the counsellor advised him to practise active listening, be patient with his wife and spend more time with her, stating that these steps could also help them stop consuming marijuana.The CBI has further alleged that financial disputes also contributed to the strained relationship. According to the chargesheet,Twisha was allegedly pressured to transfer investments worth around Rs 20 lakh from her DEMAT account into a joint account with Samarth Singh, a demand she refused, after which she was allegedly subjected to further mental harassment.In another finding, the agency claimed that Divya Singh, the former wife of Giribala Singh's elder son, was also subjected to mental cruelty after her marriage.According to the chargesheet, she was allegedly harassed for not having a child and for being employed, with investigators treating the allegation as indicative of a broader pattern of behaviour within the family.The CBI also relied on CCTV footage, forensic psychological assessment, witness statements and Twisha's personal communications to reconstruct the events leading up to her death.According to the them, Twisha was found to have been suffering from sustained psychological distress and a lack of emotional support.
