Twin toddlers die after accidentally ingesting poison in Keralam’s Idukki

In a tragic accident, twin one-year-old boys died after allegedly ingesting poison at Ozhuvathadam, near Adimaly, in Idukki on Friday night. The police identified the dead as Ihan and Rehan, sons of Ozuvathadam resident Afsal and Sandra. The parents and local people initially rushed the twins to a private hospital in Erumpupalam. As their condition deteriorated, they were moved to the Adimaly Taluk Hospital, where one child died within minutes of arrival. Though the other child was shifted to another private hospital, he too did not survive. The preliminary findings indicate that the children accidentally ingested a pesticide, which is commonly used to control pests in cardamom plantations, according to District Police Chief K. V. Naseem.“The children were playing near a shelf in the house, where the pesticide bottle was stored. The pesticide had apparently leaked onto the floor. A power outage occurred while they were playing, and the parents later found that the children’s hands and feet had traces of the pesticide. The parents immediately bathed them, but around 7.30 p.m., the twins began showing symptoms of poisoningand were taken to the hospital,” said Dr. Naseem. The police said the bodies have been shifted for post-mortem examinations.“A forensic team has gathered evidence from the scene. The exact cause of death will be confirmed once the post-mortem examination report is received. At present, no foul play is suspected, and a case of unnatural death has been registered,” the officer added. Published - September 12, 2026 07:19 pm IST
