Turok is back, with an epic new book that fans have been waiting 29 years for. Turok, the Indigenous dinosaur hunter, has been a part of the comics' scene for over 70 years, yet most know him thanks to a long-lasting line of video games. Now, an acclaimed horror author is bringing Turok back to comics, where he belongs. Turok’s adventures have been published by a handful of comic book companies since his first appearance in 1954’s Four Color Comics #596, released by the now-defunct Dell Comics, and later, Gold Key. Gold Key was one of the most popular publishers of its day, and was also the home of Magnus Robot Fighter and Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom. Turok, along with Magnus and Solar, were licensed to Valiant Comics in the early 1990s, introducing them to eager new fans. Valiant even gave Turok his own title in 1993. Then, in 1994, Acclaim Entertainment, known for making video games, acquired Valiant and began strip-mining the publisher for IPs. Turok’s concept lent itself well to the video game medium, and in 1997, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter was released for the Nintendo 64 console. Eight more titles followed, making Turok one of the biggest gaming franchises of the 1990s/2000s. Recently, Turok, Magnus and Solar found a new home at Skybound Entertainment. Skybound is making Turok’s return count by tapping one of the best horror novelists alive to resurrect the dinosaur hunter for a new era. Stephen Graham Jones and Leandro Fernandez Are Bringing Turok Back Turok Will Be One of the First Offerings of Skybound Visions Announced at New York Comic-Con, Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics will release Turok: Son of Stone, as part of its Skybound Visions imprint. The book will be written by acclaimed author Stephen Graham Jones and drawn by Leandro Fernandez. Skybound has released a plot synopsis for Turok: Son of Stone, which reads as follows: Turok wanted to dig up the past. Now, he must survive it. Turok dreamed that his dig in New Mexico would make his name legendary. But when the ground gave way, he fell through history and landed in a valley that shouldn’t exist. Where the Ice Age sits on top of the time of dinosaurs, and at every turn he discovers an era older and hungrier than the last. In a relentless quest to return to his son, Turok must unearth the truth about this hidden world and not lose his grip on a shifting reality that threatens to consume him. Sometimes a dream coming true is a nightmare beyond imagination... In addition, Skybound/Image has shared sample pages, showcasing Fernandez’s art, from Turok: Son of Stone, showing the titular dinosaur hunter in some sort of paleontological dig. Skybound released no further information at this time. Turok: Son of Stone writer Stephen Graham Jones is no stranger to horror and comic book readers alike. Jones, who is a member of the Blackfeet Nation, has penned several bestsellers and award winners, including The Only Good Indians, Mongrels and I Was a Teenage Slasher. In addition, Jones has written for comics, most notably the series Earthdivers, published by IDW. Artist Fernandez made a name for himself in books such as The Old Guard, from Image Comics. Skybound Visions, which will release Turok: Son of Stone, is an exciting new line of comics that, in the words of the company’s SVP Sean Mackiewicz: ...pairs beloved comic book characters with the most interesting comic book creators working today, to present their personal takes on these fan-favorites. In addition to Turok: Son of Stone, Skybound Visions will also release GI JOE: The Island of Dr. Mindbender and Transformers: Bumblebee–Lost Planet. Skybound did not specify if Turok’s friends Magnus and Solar would be part of the Visions imprint or not. Turok Is Returning to Comics, Where He Belongs Turok’s comic history is long and winding, bouncing from publisher to publisher, with sometimes decades separating runs. Valiant launched the character into the stratosphere in the early 1990s. Turok’s much-hyped debut issue, released at the peak of that decade’s “speculator boom,” sold a lot of copies, holding its own against major releases from DC and Marvel. After Acclaim ceased publication of its comic line, Turok would then pop up in the early 2010s at Dark Horse, and later at Dynamite. Turok’s much-hyped debut issue, released at the peak of that decade’s “speculator boom,” sold a lot of copies, holding its own against major releases from DC and Marvel. Skybound/Image has had great success with its Energon line, which breathed new life into GI Joe, Transformers and MASK, and there is every indication the publisher will do the same for Magnus, Solar and Turok. By bringing in a massive talent like Stephen Graham Jones, Skybound shows it means business when it comes to these characters. Turok deserves to be known as more than a video game, and Skybound is making sure this happens early next year. Turok: Son of Stone #1 is on sale March 10 from Image/Skybound!
