US President Donald Trump has said “major progress” is being made toward establishing a US Army base in Poland, calling it a potential “historic step” in bilateral ties. “If this happens, the location will be announced very soon,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Thursday, crediting what he called the “bold leadership” of Polish President Karol Nawrocki, a right-winger aligned with Trump’s MAGA movement. Poland’s defense minister, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, said on Tuesday that he would meet US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in Washington next week for talks on Poland’s security and a permanent American military presence. Kosiniak-Kamysz said a decision on the proposed base was expected “in the coming weeks.” Poland formally proposed establishing a permanent US base in June, shortly after Washington announced plans to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany, which hosts the largest American military presence in Europe. A US delegation visited Poland last week to inspect potential locations for the base. About 10,000 US troops are stationed in Poland, although most serve under rotational arrangements.
