President Donald Trump gave a cryptic answer Sunday about the 2028 presidential field, suggesting he views someone other than the top polling candidates as the greatest threat toward Republicans retaining the White House in the next election cycle. The president spoke with a local Fox affiliate Sunday while on the ground in Port Huron, Michigan, ahead of a campaign rally for downballot Republicans. When asked about which candidates might run in 2028, he first answered: “I could tell you who I think, but it’s a little bit early.” “We have [Vice President] JD [Vance], [Secretary of State] Marco [Rubio], and many others. We have a great bench. They have no bench,” the president continued before adding that former Vice President Kamala Harris, who Trump defeated in the 2024 presidential election, and Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) are “possibilities” on the Democratic side of the aisle.“I think Kamala is leading right now, which is pretty amazing, but that’s okay if she’s leading,” Trump added, an apparent reference to a recent survey conducted by the New York Times and Sienna University that found Harris polling at 12%, top of the potential field, when Democratic respondents were asked to list their first choice for 2028. “I haven’t seen Gavin’s name much lately,” Trump also said.“No, you have four or five — you have some good people that people don’t talk about, actually,” he continued. “I hope they continue not to talk about them.”TRUMP: NICKI MINAJ HAS ‘ONE HELL OF A BEAUTIFUL A**’No other potential 2028 presidential candidate besides Harris cracked double-digit support in the survey. Newsom came in second with 9%, with former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA), and Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) earning 7%, 6%, 4%, and 3%, respectively. The survey also found that 15% of respondents supported another candidate, while a whopping 45% said they didn’t currently know who they wanted to run.
