Trump holds first televised Camp David Cabinet meeting in second term

It was the first Cabinet meeting at Camp David in Trump's second term after an earlier attempt in May was called off because of bad weather.Trump's Cabinet meetings have often run for hours, with officials giving updates on their departments and agencies, while also praising him and his leadership. Unlike other presidents, Trump allows news media to stay for the full meetings, a move press secretary Karoline Leavitt has said shows his commitment to transparency. More recently, Trump has said the meetings have become too long and has asked speakers to keep their remarks brief.Opening Friday's meeting, Trump pointed to the setting and said there was "something very unique" about it. "It's Camp David, and this room is a very, very special room," he said, as the White House highlighted the occasion through the morning.The public part of Trump's Cabinet meetings has at times lasted as long as three hours. He has usually allowed everyone at the table to speak, though he has more recently reduced the number of oral reports. Referring to the length of earlier meetings, Trump said at the May meeting, "Everybody around here has got a lot to say. But we did that once, and it lasted for like four or five hours. It was a little much." Camp David was set up in 1942 during President Franklin Roosevelt's time in office and has been used by every president since. Roosevelt had liked spending time on a presidential yacht, but military officials and the US Secret Service raised concerns about his safety on open water during World War II. He then asked the National Park Service to identify places within 160 kilometres of the White House where he could rest.Roosevelt chose the site now known as Camp David and first called it Shangri-La, after James Hilton's novel "Lost Horizon". President Dwight Eisenhower later renamed it Camp David after his grandson and father. Trump spent more weekends at the retreat during his first term, but has visited it less often in his second. His most recent visit before Friday was in June for Father's Day. In 2019, during his first term, Trump said on social media that he had cancelled a secret weekend meeting at Camp David with Taliban and Afghanistan leaders. The meeting had been planned just days before the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks, but was called off after a bombing in Kabul killed 12 people, including a US soldier.Presidents have often used Camp David for private and secure talks with foreign leaders. In 1978, Jimmy Carter brought the leaders of Egypt and Israel there for talks that led to the Camp David Accords, a peace agreement between the two countries. Camp David was also the place where Carter met representatives from different sections of American society in 1979 before delivering his nationally televised speech on energy policy that later became known as the "malaise" speech, though he never used that word.The retreat's main purpose is to give presidents a place to rest, relax and recharge. The 180-acre site is run by the Navy and guarded by Marines. It includes a cabin called Aspen for the president, around a dozen other cabins for guests, and a main lodge with conference rooms, a dining room and an office for the president.
