3 min readOnce upon a time, there was a president of the United States who got up to give a speech and went bananas. To wit:But a short time since you had a ticket before you for the presidency. I was placed upon that ticket with a distinguished fellow-citizen, who is now no more. I know there are some who complain, "very unfortunately.” Yes, “unfortunately” for some that God rules on high and deals in right. [Cheers.] Yes, unfortunately the ways of Providence are mysterious and incomprehensible, controlling all those who exclaim “unfortunate.” That was my object in appearing before you to-night, and I want to say that I have lived among the American people, and have represented them in some public capacity for the last 25 years; and where is the man or woman who can place his finger upon one single act of mine deviating from any pledge of mine, or in violation of the constitution of the country. [Cheers.] I am not the Chief Justice. I am not the prosecuting attorney. [Cheers.] I am not the jury. I will tell you what I did do. I called upon your Congress that is trying to break up the government.CROWD: [Cries of...] “You be d—d” [and cheers mingled with hisses, and great confusion.]CROWD MEMBER: “Don’t get mad, Andy.”Well, I will tell you who is mad—“Whom the Gods wish to destroy they first make mad.” Did your Congress order any of them to be tried?CROWD: “Three cheers for Congress!”Then, fellow-citizens, we might as well allay your passions and permit reason to resume her empire and prevail. [Cheers.]I care not for dignity. There is a portion of your countrymen who will always respect their fellow-citizens when they are entitled to respect, and there is a portion of them who have no respect for themselves and consequently have no respect for others.CROWD: [Cries of...] “Traitor!”I wish I could see that man. I would bet you now that if the light fell on your face, cowardice and treachery would be seen in it. Show yourself. Come out here where I can see you. [Shouts of laughter.] I stand now where I stood when the rebellion commenced. Who has sacrificed more than I? Who has run greater risks? But the factions, domineering and tyrannical party in Congress has undertaken to poison the minds of the people against me.That was President Andrew Johnson at a stop in Cleveland on September 4, 1866, on his catastrophic “Swing Around the Circle” tour. He embarked on the lengthy road trip to present his case to the people prior to the 1866 midterm elections and, to be honest, stop the eventual slide in Congress toward his impeachment. It had the opposite effect. Johnson’s audiences screamed at him, and he screamed back, comparing himself repeatedly to Jesus. Eventually, the tour got so rowdy that, at a stop in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, an overloaded temporary stand collapsed into a dry canal and killed 13 people.Newspapers were horrified. One called Johnson’s Cleveland speech the most disgraceful ever delivered by an American president. The New York Times huffed, “The president of the United States cannot enter upon an exchange of epithets with the brawling of a mob without seriously compromising his official character.”Not until this past Friday night did old Andy Johnson get out of the cellar. The current president delivered a speech that made Johnson in Cleveland sound like Pericles. His jokes were mean and cruel and, worst of all, light-years from being funny. They were as dead as Kelsey’s nuts as soon as they dropped from his lips. He bristled with self-satisfied incivility. He seemed oblivious to the existence of any other human being. CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, to name one, seemed to be little more than one of those targets at the end of a firing range. But I can exclusively reveal to you this evening that for the heaviest of the heavyweights, we will have sloppy Chris Christie—one of the sloppiest human beings you’ll ever meet—fighting, I would say, I could mention the governor of Chicago, but I’m going to mention instead Jerry Nadler. And they’re fighting for a big piece of cheesecake. Big, fat piece of cheesecake. Who the hell wrote that line? Good god, somebody get the net.
