Trump’s declaration naming the Strait of Hormuz as US territory comes amid Washington’s prolonged blockade of Iranian ports. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! Today, the US leader claimed all talks to end the war with Iran were over. He said on Truth Social: “There are no talks or conversations going on, or scheduled, with the Islamic Republic of Iran. “The Naval Blockade remains in full force and effect. The Hormuz Strait is open and operating. “All water mines have been removed or detonated.” His post comes after the temporary peace deal – known as the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) – collapsed last month amid renewed strikes. Tit-for-tat attacks between Washington and Tehran have cast doubt over the prospect of a lasting peace agreement being ironed out in the near future. No further details about the ship’s origin or its cargo have been reported on yet. On Monday, Trump vowed to “bomb the s**t” out of Oman if it got in his way of striking a peace deal with Iran. Oman has acted as a key mediator between Washington and Tehran over recent months as both sides try to end the spiralling fighting. But fears have mounted in the White House that Muscat may be siding with the mullah regime and giving them favourable conditions. The US president told Fox News: “If Oman gets in the way, we’ll bomb the s**t out of them.” The threat came after Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran had reached an agreement with Oman for commercial shipping in the strait. He announced on Saturday: “Despite US obstruction, the talks have made positive progress over the past three weeks, and an agreement has been reached on the shipping route map.” Trump meanwhile also previously declared that he would make the trade route US territory once the war is over. In a speech on Friday, he said: “After we finish defeating Iran, which is being very badly defeated – pretty soon, I’ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States. “Essentially, that’s what it is. We have a blockade. No ships get through unless we want them to.” Iran has also said the Strait of Hormuz will remain shut until the US respects the MoU signed in June. The conditions in the short-lived deal state that the US must lift its blockade of Iran’s ports, remove sanctions, release frozen assets and end military operations. The MoU quickly unravelled in early July amid a fresh burst of blitzes between the US and Iran. Trump said the deal was “over” on July 7 and just one week later, the Iranian regime said it was “suspended”. Under the MoU, Iran and the US had committed to negotiating a final deal to end the war for good in a maximum of 60 days. The final talks would have finally covered off more sensitive issues such as the fate of Iran’s nuclear programme. A senior Iranian official also said on Monday Tehran would shift to a “fully offensive” posture due to the stalled diplomatic efforts. One of Iran’s top military chiefs also threatened to break Trump’s legs after he laid territorial claim to the Strait of Hormuz. Responding to Trump’s remarks, Major General Amir Hatami said joking about such a move was a “major mistake” because Iran had defenders who would “break your legs”. Comment now
