HBO's return to crime has added Hollywood royalty. HBO's True Detective is an acclaimed anthology crime series that premiered in 2014 and was created by Nic Pizzolatto. Each season has a different cast, an entirely new setting, and an even greater mystery for the new characters to solve. True Detective's previous stars include Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, Mahershala Ali, Stephen Dorff, Jodie Foster, and Kali Reis. Now, a new team has been built and revealed. True Detective season 5 will bring Antonio Banderas to the anthology series alongside Nicolas Cage. The news was shared by HBO Max, with the confirmation that production will begin in 2027. Season 4's showrunner, Issa López, will be returning for season 5 of the crime series. A lot of information surrounding the upcoming season has been largely kept under wraps, but it will be set in Jamaica Bay, New York, with Banderas' character named Rai Garcia and Cage portraying Henry Logan. HBO's Head of Drama Series, Francesca Orsi, previously spoke of the upcoming season to Deadline, sharing, "Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful." López also shared with the New York Post that there will be "important connections" with season 4, which was titled Night Country, but "it's a new story, new characters, everything." True Detective season 4, released in 2024, achieved high critical acclaim, but failed to captivate audiences, causing a divisive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics rated the fourth season a near-perfect 93% with audiences giving a 55% rating. Reviews stated, "Issa Lopez brings "True Detective: Night Country" to the screen with a complex look at the lingering effects of trauma," and "With its atmospheric setting and standout performances, this season rivals the series' acclaimed debut." Cage was confirmed by the man himself during his Spotlight panel at New York Comic Con. While he was discussing his future plans following Prime Video's cancellation of Spider-Noir, he shared that "I think I might do a season of True Detective," before stating, "That's okay that I'm the first to announce that, right?" With Cage and Banderas now officially confirmed, everyone's eyes will be looking for what new mystery awaits in True Detective season 5. At the time of writing, it's unclear when True Detective season 5 will be released.
