Trial for 9/11 ‘mastermind’ who ‘plotted atrocity from A to Z’ is finally set 25 years after attack killed thousands

AN ALLEGED mastermind of the 9/11 terror attacks will stand trial more than a quarter of a century after the depraved plot that killed thousands. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, 61, will face a military judge in June 2028 – having previously admitted he planned the infamous operation “from A-to-Z”. But a landmark ruling issued by Judge Lt Col Michael Schrama has stated Mohammed and three other suspects will finally face trial. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! His alleged accomplices are Walid bin Attash, Ali Abdul Aziz Ali and Mustafa al-Hawsawi. The case has been bogged down for years by pre-trial legal hold-ups and arguments over what evidence can and cannot be used during the trial. Mohammed had previously reached a plea deal where he would admit guilt in exchange for being spared the death penalty. It would have given him a life sentence without possibility of parole. But that agreement has been thrown out – and he is now set to stand trial more than 25 years after the devastating attacks which left nearly 3,000 dead. The bombshell ruling comes just weeks before the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Deranged hijackers flew passenger jets into the World Trade Centre in New York City, and at the Pentagon in Virginia, on the morning of September 11, 2001. Another plane that was hijacked crashed in a field in Pennsylvania as passengers fought the terrorists. A total of 2,977 people died in the attacks, including 67 Brits. Mohammed has been accused of masterminding the idea of training pilots to fly commercial jets into buildings. He allegedly took the plans for the sick plot to Osama Bin Laden, the head of al-Qaeda. Attash is accused of running the training camp in Afghanistan. And Saudi man al-Hawsawi is accused of supplying money, credit cards and clothing for those involved in the plot. The Guantanamo Bay facility opened in Cuba six months after the 9/11 attacks – and about 15 prisoners are believed to still be there. Comment now
