Less than a month after the couple tied the knot with a star-studded party at Madison Square Garden, the Train lead singer shared insight into the white veil occasion—and the longtime friendship with Swift that led to his place on the 1000-person guest list. “I think my invitation was just due to having a connection with her at one point in her life and I was very honored to be there,” Monahan told E! News in an exclusive interview. “I was blown away with how incredible and beautiful it was. So glad that she and Travis found each other ‘cause I think they’re a really beautiful, connected couple of people.” As for Monahan, he and Swift go way back, as he not only worked with her on her Red (Taylor’s Version) track “Babe” but previously made a guest appearance to perform “Drive By” with her on the Red tour in 2013.“Taylor and I, we met several times and then she asked if I would write a song with her and it was a really lovely experience,” Monahan mused. “I think she’s one of the smartest people I’ve been around—and talented.” And while Monahan and Swift’s invisible strings haven’t intertwined as much in recent years, he admitted his son Rock Monahan’s growing interest in music reminds him of the “Opalite” singer’s early journey. “Like Taylor Swift, he’s 14,” Monahan shared. “Their beginnings are different. She was driven by songwriting, he’s driven by guitar and singing. He wants to be a shredder. He understands songwriting. I think that would be the next step for him.” Meanwhile, Monahan himself has also dipped into Swift’s ability to perfectly capture nostalgia as exemplified with The Eras Tour. Train’s newest album, Mad Dog in the Fog, which releases August 28, reflects back to the band’s San Francisco genesis, during a time when they often played in a coffee shop by the same name. “I really have never written about my journey from Pennsylvania to San Francisco to start the band,” Monahan explained. “And all of the life that happened between then, so that’s really what this album is inspired by.”Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagicIndeed, the titular track, out today, July 30, captures how everything fell into place for the band—which also currently includes Hector Maldonado, Jerry Becker, Matt Musty and Butch Walker—in Fog City back in 1994. “When we ended up in San Francisco and created Train, it was the perfect place to be because there were so many coffee houses back then that loved having performers for free,” Monahan detailed. “So Mad Dog in the Fog was an important part of our journey and there’s a song called that and the whole story about all that.” In tandem with their newest album, Train is also about to embark on a nostalgic tour, Drops of Jupiter: 25 Years in the Atmosphere Tour, to celebrate the anniversary of one of their biggest hits. Meanwhile, Monahan—dad to Rock as well as Autumn, 18, with wife Ginean Rapp, as well as Patrick, 33, and Emelia, 29, with ex Amber Peterson—isn’t turning down the idea of Swift coming back into his musical atmosphere. As he put of his future collaboration aspirations, “I’d love to sing a song with Taylor, we haven’t done that yet.” For now, attending her wedding is a worthy placeholder.
