Train derails with ‘40 people feared trapped’ near UK station as emergency services flood ‘buckled’ track & line shut

DOZENS of passengers are feared to be trapped after train derailed near a busy UK station – as emergency crews flood the “buckled” track. Writing on X, she said: “Deeply concerned of reports of a derailment involving a Southern train in Lewes, Sussex. “Grateful to emergency services who are on the scene supporting those impacted. “We are working quickly with the rail industry and local partners to assist passengers.” Most read in The Sun No trains are now able to run through the area and those already travelling have been warned to expect hour-long delays. British Transport Police said: “Officers are currently on scene close to Lewes railway station following reports of a derailed train at 3.54pm today. “We’re responding alongside paramedics and the fire service and will provide more information as soon as we can.” Officers from Sussex Police are also in attendance, the force confirmed. East Sussex Fire and Rescue said an update on the derailment would be issued at 5pm. The service said: “We can confirm we were called at 3.55pm to reports that a train had derailed just outside Lewes. “We are working with other emergency services at the scene. “Further updates will be given around 5pm.” Issuing a statement, Southern Railway said: “A train has derailed in the Lewes area. This has closed all lines running through this station. “As a result of this, trains are currently unable to run through the area to allow the emergency services to attend the incident. “Major disruption is expected until 22:00.”
