Tragedy as ‘immensely popular’ teacher, 38, ‘under stress ahead of Ofsted inspection’ found dead in bed

AN “IMMENSELY popular” teacher was found dead after “self-medicating” to cope with growing stress at work with an Ofsted inspection looming, an inquest heard. Katie Allen-Gyves, 38, told her GP she was staying awake until 3am marking and was exhausted by the demands of her role just days before she died. Tragically her body was discovered by her devastated mother, Rebecca Gyves, on December 6, 2025. Five days earlier, Katie had visited her GP complaining of high blood pressure, the Mail reports. She said she was expecting Ofsted “at any time” and described feeling stressed because of work. The doctor issued her with a sick note until April 2026 after diagnosing hypertension. But the inquest heard she never told the school she had been signed off. Senior coroner Alison Mutch said Katie died from the toxic effects of prescribed medication combined with the sedative effects of an over the counter medicine. Most read in The Sun The court heard she had been prescribed medication for opioid use disorder and ADHD. Tests also found a significant level of an over the counter medicine in her system. The coroner concluded Katie had probably been trying to reduce one prescription while also “self-medicating” to help herself sleep, with the combination ultimately proving fatal. Ms Mutch said she had been under significant pressure at work and struggling with a lack of sleep. She said evidence showed Katie was working long hours before continuing with planning and marking after returning home. The coroner also found it was clear the expected Ofsted inspection had been weighing heavily on her mind and she had become frustrated by pressures at work. However, Ms Mutch stressed there was no evidence Katie intended to end her life. She noted she had been making plans for Christmas and wrapping presents before her death. Paying tribute, the coroner described her as a determined woman who had overcome addiction and transformed her life. She said teaching had become her calling and praised her commitment to helping children with special educational needs. The hearing was told messages recovered from her phone showed she had been worrying about her health, high blood pressure and coping with increasing work demands. Police coroner’s officer Nicholas Belfield said the messages referred to frustrations at work, concerns about the upcoming Ofsted inspection and a feeling she was not being listened to. Her mother told the inquest she was “extremely proud” of her daughter. Mrs Gyves said she noticed a change after the October half-term and believed she was working too hard. She recalled her daughter insisting: “I have to get this done”, as she stayed up late planning lessons and marking work. Louise Stubbs, interim vice-principal at Cedar Mount Academy, described Katie as an “immensely popular” member of staff. Principal Stephen Garvey called her “exceptional, very gifted and very bright and passionate” and said he had no idea she had been struggling. He told the court: “The reflection point here is that Katie was struggling. “I wish I knew. Immediately that would have been a conversation.”
