Divya said bike users have to also pay proper attention to wearing the head gear with chin strap fastened properly. The SSP, in a release, said with continuous efforts and road safety awareness initiatives, an increase in the number of two-wheeler riders wearing helmet has been observed in Puducherry. There has been an improved awareness among the public regarding road safety, she said. However, wearing a helmet was not sufficient as witnessed during a recent accident. A college student who was riding a bike with his helmet unstrapped met with an accident recently. The helmet could not provide adequate protection during the fall, and as a result the student sustained serious injuries. The student has been shifted to a private hospital in Chennai for advanced treatment, she said. “We appeal to two-wheeler riders and pillion riders to travel only after wearing helmet. The helmet can save lives only when it is of good quality, worn correctly and securely fastened. Two-wheeler users should ensure the helmet fits snugly and covers the head properly,” she said. The two-wheeler users should fasten and tighten the chin strap well before starting the vehicle. An unfastened helmet could come-off during an accident, leaving the head vulnerable to serious injuries. Bike users should ensure that the helmet purchased adhere to safety standards, Ms. Divya said.“Public is therefore urged to make proper helmet use a habit and encourage family members, friends and fellow roads users to follow essential safety precautions,” the SSP said.
